Wow, that one was from about 20 years ago. But it made me remember playing outside at Dodson Elementary in New Iberia when there were no fences protecting us from the 4 streets surrounding the campus. There is a big fence there today.
Even as 1st graders we just played about 20 feet away from the roads. If a ball fell across the street we ran up to road, looked for traffic and then ran across to get it.
I never heard a teacher warn us: 'Stay out of the street'. My parents never warned me. I guess we were just smarter than today's 1st graders.
