Not Grandpa Buff!!
Crashed shortly after takeoff so I'm guessing the crew didn't make it. God bless those airmen and their families.
The B-52 is relatively safe and is an obviously very experienced airframe. Damn this sucks.

Extremely sad. There doesn’t look like anything is left.

Yes it does. I wonder what in the heck could have happened.

Oh snap ... not good.
I walked under the wing of one of those things deplanning from a canceled jump one time ... it's difficult to express just how big those things are but there's only so many air bases, runways, in the country that can handle them.

Early this year Boeing was awarded a $2 billion contract to modify and test two B-52s equipped with new engines. I wonder if this was one of the two planes.
Prayers for those who were on board.

Google AI says B52s have begun extensive testing at Edwards AFB.

Had a professor in college, Col. Edwards, that was either a flight engineer or navigator or something on B-52s in the 60's and 70's. He told us some amazing but very scary stories.
He saw one blow up and crash attempting to fuel in flight when it ran into the fuel plane, there were two B-52s and his was the other one and they saw it all play out. The B-52 missed the fuel connection thing and went to dive and make a turn around. Pilot didn't leave enough room and when he nosed down and turned, the wing of the B-52 crashed right into the fuel plane. Boom! Scary. I can't imagine seeing that happen right in front of you out the window.
On another flight the pilot lost control and they were in a dive. He saw the pilot was pinned back and couldn't get to the controls so he bailed out. Since the chute opens when you bail out, it took him forever to get to the ground because they were at like 50,000 feet. He kept waiting to see an explosion below him when the plane hit the ground. He never saw it. Then he realized they must have pulled out of it. He knew he was in trouble then. Somehow the pilot got to the controls. Said bailing out was not fun. He got hurt pretty bad. Concussion, bruised/broken ribs and maybe he said he broke a leg or arm. Then he landed in a field and got shot at twice by a farmer with a shotgun before the farmer realized he was a military pilot. He went on trial and he said the pilot testifying on his behalf was all that saved him. Pilot said if he could have reached the lever, he would have bailed out as well.
