I think to be a high school teacher you should have to be at least 30 or something like that. But to be elementary I see no issues with younger ones teaching.

This may be unpopular, but has anyone ever challenged the legality of these laws?

There are many hierarchical relationships out there that aren't criminalized for sexual conduct. This seems like an equal protection issue to me.

quote:

In the case of Caldwell v. Texas, Chief Justice Melville Fullerwrote on behalf of a unanimous Court as follows, regarding the Fourteenth Amendment: "the powers of the States in dealing with crime within their borders are not limited, but no State can deprive particular persons or classes of persons of equal and impartial justice under the law."

30 seconds? I'm not trying to kill myself or impress nobody - 30 seconds? Hell, I'll have been asleep 23 to 25 seconds at that point.

So, if you graduate from college at 22, what do you do for 3 years until you're allowed to teach?

As per the pic... She is very nice looking. But not the best. This is my favorite teacher predator...

Debra LaFave. But her speaking voice was baby talk. Very irritating.

I agree with him.

It's absurd.

Fire them. That makes sense.

But......

Making it illegal for two adults to frick because of their social relationship to each other is asinine.

I’m sure the “victim” will be fine. However, is it too much to ask that the school system we pay for and trust our children with could maybe refrain from literally fricking our children? I don’t think that is an unreasonable request.

Surely the identity of the student has been leaked by now, especially since he was 18 and this is only “illegal” because of a technicality.

I think you have “technicality” mixed up with element of the offense.

I’d decline to prosecute depending on the details though.

the technicality that teachers can't bone students?

Serious question- if this happened in college, same ages on both sides, is he considered a "child"?

Is she prosecuted?

At some point this is a workplace violation and not a criminal act. Given that the "victim" was 18, to me this seems more an issue for the school system than the criminal justice system. Sort of an arbitrary difference to say 17 is assault and 18 isn't, but better than saying any teacher sleeping with a student is criminal regardless of the students age. What if he was a poor student and held back and was 20? To say that is criminal would be insane.

This is setting aside the issue that someone else posted that she apparently worked a different school.

This same story was discussed on OT last week and I believe the teacher did not teach in the same school as the student, which changes the story a little bit.

It absolutely does change the story, and not just a little bit.

If she wasn’t a teacher at the same school there is no position of authority over him. That’s the argument I’d make.

So you believe in age discrimination as long as it fits your narrative?
