Duck Calls

I have decided that I want to start practicing with some duck calls so that maybe next year I will be worth a crap.
What brands or calls do you recommend?
What all calls should I consider "Must Haves"?
All hunting will be done in marsh as opposed to flooded timber.

To be honest the only must have is a whistle. Calling is very overrated especially in the marsh. Rice fields and timber i can understand calling but even then on a limited basis.

Haydel dr85 was what i learned on.

The three that are always in my bag are an RNT original, an RNT daisy cutter and and Echo timber
All are acrylic.
I have a whistle as well
The Haydel DR85 and the Primos winch are probably the two best calls for the money though.

It seems that both of you like the Haydel DR85. I will have to look into this one. I knew about the whistle, and have one already.
Whats the big difference in the wooden calls and the acrylic?

For early in the season..a must have of course is a good ole mallard hen call.
For late in the season...from my experience..ducks think those mallard hens are armed to the teeth..and some will flare on a mallard hen...so I go with a pintail whistle....4 in 1 types.
Lately been using a Duck Commander Mallard drake call with lots of luck too.

all depends on your preferences man every smoker i know blows a rich n tone bc they dont take much air...maybe you want a nicer call or a cheaper call....i say for the money a duck commander is the best but i have blown RNTs and they are very nice just a little pricey for my taste. really if your good with a whistle and can call at the right times its no problem. the primos whistle with the roller is pretty sweet its just tough to make it not roll
is you get a speck call youre wasting your money if you dont buy a chencaille

I have a Sean Mann speck call. sounds great and super easy to blow. Chein cailles are good calls too though.

i never tried that kind i dont think but i know its head and shoulders over the ones that i have tried

calling is the biggest mistake most people make, but the RNT micro hen is great try a double reed call they are forgiving but again a 1/2 dozen decoys will get you more ducks than a call.

I learned how to call with the infamous RNT cocobolo disk package and people that were willing to teach me. Over the years I've learned a little and made a few friends willing to help me out. Only advice I can give you upfront is not to use your throat to add "voice" to the call- unless youre using your pig call for blacks and greys.

the DR85 is a great call.
Calling is just like going to a bar. Some nights making a scene works, sometimes sitting quiet at the bar works. You just have to learn to mix it up.
Just like whores, you can usually tell a duck that wants to come in to your spread real quick when you hit the call. If they like it and respond, keep doing what got em to commit till you shoot.
If they dont respond do something different, shutting up is effective, also mix up your spread'
5 dekes when everyone else has 500, 80 when everyone else is plopping out the same 24 also works.

Out of all the fancy calls out there, I probably use a Faulk single reed more than anything. I like it because you don't have to blow hard and, like a previous poster said, less is more in the marsh.

this...
the duck picker is pretty solid and forgiving. i personally prefer a RNT daisy cutter to reach those way out there ducks and a Echo Timber for in-close work...but at the end of the day whatever call (or calling) ducks respond to is what is needed.
IRT wood vs. acrylic it is the density of the material. acrylic is typically harder/denser than wood so the sound can be louder - most wooden calls are a little more subdued for closer in calling.

Good?
That is an insult to the Saltzman name

I have the Echo "Meat Hanger" and love it. (Acrylic)
I learned on an Echo "Trash Talker"...I think they sell them at Academy and they're pretty cheap

Haydel dr-85 to get their attention
Duck Commander Mallard cut-down for when their working in close. Raspier, snottier, quiter then the Haydel.
Haydel mp-90. Sometimes they don't want to hear quacks and a few tweets on this (I grunt into it at the same time) gets them in.
Duck Commander wood duck call. The only woodie call I've ever had that I could actually make do the "TEE-oooweeEEET" call of a woodie sitting on the water sound convincing.

Duck Commander calls are in my opinion the only call that a really good caller can make sound exactly like a duck. They are, however, a little tougher to blow than Haydel's calls. If you don't blow a Commander from the gut, you'll sound horrible.
Hadel's calls sound pretty good, and are easier to blow. Once you've mastered calling with a Haydel's call, I'd then move up to a Duck Commander product.

Good calling vs bad calling and knowing when not to call are more important than what brand
Some particular calls don't work well for people others do
Daisy cutter and echo are our faves but we don't leave home without a whistle, grey duck call and a secret weapon
Case in point blind a and b each have 4 hunters blind b gets 24 mostly big ducks..... Blind b has 6 when blind a heads for camp
Difference blind a was getting all the ducks called away from b.....poor timing and wrong calls..... Right timing and calls
Left blind b real frustrated
I grew up on faulks, yentzen, haydels, and dc.....but the higher end calls are harder to master but are much better and more consistent when you make 45 plus hunts a year....
To say that haydels is a step down from dc is ford/chevy.....
Comparing either to echo or rnt is like comparing miss. State to LSU
