If the dealer suspects it is a straw purchase, he is obligated to not make the sale. The things you mentioned, especially buying multiple guns of which you have no knowledge, is a prime example.
I got a quick lesson on how to coach my kids while at the gun counter when my son was 8 or so. Young dude at the counter emphasized that I couldn’t give the youth 20ga I was buying to my son and if I was he couldn’t sell it to me. I promised him the short barrel compact stock was for me and told my kids from then on when I’m buying a gun don’t even act like they are going to shoot it.

A gift isn’t a straw (not strawman) purchase. The crime occurs when money changes hands.
A straw purchase is all about the actual buyer. And by that we mean person who pays for it.
The “classic” straw purchase is when somebody gives you money to go into a gun store and buy a gun for them, because they can’t legally do so.
You cannot receive money, services, or goods as compensation. It has to be a gift with zero compensation.

Are most of the thugs with girlfriends who have no criminal record making the actual purchase these days ?

Like the other poster stated, they attempt to send the girlfriend in with cash. The girlfriend has no clue what she's looking for, so she calls the boyfriend and asks.
It's easy to bust:
Girlfriend walks in store - "I needs to buy a gun"
"Do you know what you're interested in?"
Girlfriend looks at a text on her phone. "A Glock 19 with an extra clip"
Store clerk "Do you want a 4th Gen or 5th Gen?"
Girlfriend "Hold up, let me ask" phone call "Hey, he want to know if you want 4 Gins or 5 Gins"
"Sorry, can't sell you a gun today" or "We're out of those right now"

This is correct but more so is the fact that you can definitely purchase firearms for your children and direct family members as long as they aren’t prohibited. As a gift, because you want them to hunt with you or participate in shooting sports. The guy who said you can’t buy your kid a shotgun was flat wrong.

I was in a pawn shop a few years ago looking for a hammer drill or something.
Buddy walks in...."Aye yaw got any Draco's?"
He is probably behind bars as we speak.

Well, that guy was a complete dumbass then. Needs to learn what a straw purchase is. What you described is no where close to a straw purchase.
You are absolutely allowed to buy your kid a gun as a gift. I've done it many times and the gun store I was buying from absolutely knew what I was doing.
Do you think a Cricket .22 is being bought for adults?

I never bought a gun until I was 51 years old. I had two shotguns and a 22 rifle my dad and grandfather had given me as a kid, but I'd never bought one myself. I was nervous about the process when I did it the 1st time, but had no problems.
After I had a blood clot mess up my leg, I felt like my limping made me look like an easy target, so I wanted to start carrying a handgun. Bought an M&P Shield at Ron's in Bossier City in 2012. Since then I've bought all of my guns online and had them shipped to local dealers.
A guy in my Sunday school class works the gun counter at a local retail establishment. He says they don't sell to anyone who smells like they have been smoking pot. He says that weeds out a lot of people, regardless of the way they look, every day.

You misspelled ask in the context. It's "axe"

Ohh I know but it was the first time I ever bought from a big box store and not a local gun store. I don’t argue with 22yr olds, DMV workers or cops with crew cuts!!! Just say yes sir and what ever you say sir mam as polite as possible!!

Hebert guns did this to me.
I went in for a M&P 22 mag pistol and my brother from Texas was with me. We were going gator hunting and I wanted that 22 mag pistol. Brother sees a Ruger .22 pistol and I mentioned to my bro you know you can’t buy that right?
I tell the gun guy that I wanted and he freaked out. Starts yapping about a straw purchase
They weren’t going to sell me anything but I asked of my brother buys a 10/22 takedown could I please buy the two other pistols. They talked to someone and were fine with that.

Exactly. A wise man once made a point that those who are willing to give up freedom for safety, don't deserve either.
Also, some on this thread remind me of a thread on the money board where a bunch of self-proclaimed anti-socialists are ecstatic about their kids getting free money from the government.

At the local gun store culcha would always come in and try to buy 5,7, or however many bullets they needed to fill their mags
. Too cheap to buy a box. Unreal these people walk among us.
Posted on 2/27/26 at 8:06 pm to Dickaroos
Buying enough rounds just to fill your gun was common practice back in the day. I guess everyone was "cheap" back then.
ETA: That's why 20 round boxes of self defense rounds are common now.

To cheap to buy any sometimes, given what is seen when local police post pictures of what they confiscate after a bust, the mags are loaded with whatever these guys pickup off the ground. 9mm brass case FMJ stacked on some nickel plated JHP stacked on a rat shot round and a .380 ACP stuck in there for good measure...

Everyone knows you shoot FMJ when houses and cars are your target.
