And how do you gain access?

Also, how's the fishing in them and is anyone eating the fish they catch? I ask because I wonder if runoff maybe pollutes the water.

My guess is you can maybe catch a bunch of stunted bass but how's the panfishing or maybe catfishing?

Thanks much.

Sometimes it is just easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. I say go wet a line.

Nah, it's a bar pit

If you ask anyone where the best borrow pit is, they won't know wtf you're talking about

Yeah but it's "bar pit" for short.

Do you fish them?

I have permission to fish barrow pits behind the levee between erwinville and new roads. They are filled with river water so I don’t understand the concern of pollution or runoff. I catch a ton of bar bass and also catch largemouth bass in the 13” to 3lb range.

I have access to some near Vidalia/Ferriday. Never tried fishing for bass, but the bar pits are LOADED with catfish and Sacalait. Best time to fish is when the river starts going down and its 2-3' in the trees along the levee. I don't live near there, so i don't get to go often. Never tried when the water is really high, so not sure how the fishing is.

We fished them back in the day. There's a bunch of them on the levee North of Pat's Fisherman Wharf. We did pretty good off the bank and would do better when we'd bring a little boat and trolling motor. We never got run off or asked to leave. Pretty sure it's public land.

You see alot of them off the interstate and places like that. I don't know who owns that sorta land. I assume it's private but I really don't know.

I fish them all the time at my camp when the river isn't so high. Which means I haven't fished them since last September. Wear the catfish out. Used to wear the perch and bass out but that is going to shite. Pits silting in and Asian carp being the reasons I've heard for the decline in game fish...

eta- I see you mean interstate ponds. Can't speak much for those..

I always thought it was "borrow" pit. Borrow for the dirt was taken or borrowed to build roads or interstates. Maybe shortened to bar pits.

Buddy of mine thought they were called "ball pits" when we were younger. Said they got that name cause there were always random balls floating it them.
