Seems like I rent one to use at the camp for a day once a year and costs me $75. $150 depending if I don't feel like rushing back home within 24 hours to return it in time.
I use ethanol free gas, but still don't want to buy junk that wont start in a year. I see harbor freight has one called the predator. I'm not seeing any info saying it has any relation to the predator generators.

Is a tractor implement not an option?

The difference in those and what you are talking about is game changing.

I have the earthquake and it has more than enough power to make you look like a fool...

But one man diggers will wear you out. Especially if there are roots

Yeah. Do you have a small tractor or access to one? This is so much easier.

A friend of mine showed up with one of the Harbor Freight augers for the installation of 18 posts. He had used it on two previous fencing jobs and I figured that it was already on borrowed time.

It worked like a charm. Cranked on the first pull every time. Had plenty of power. Good tool. Might not be what you need for commercial use, but did the job.

I'm just curious, what you're using it for at the camp annually.

IMHO if you can't knock it out with a post hole digger in 20 minutes, and its a recurring thing I'd definitely go with the tractor implement.

Those one man augers scare the hell out of me. I’ve used them twice in my life and lost the fight both times. The last time, it caught on the edge of a concrete slab and it felt like it pulled my shoulder out of place. I was seeing stars. I turned it off and left it in the hole while I walked it off. My wife walked over to it and just as I yelled at her to leave it alone, she started it and it spun around almost pulling her down.

I think I’d rather use a post hole digger.

My neighbor has HF Predator one man auger I've used extensively. There is definitely a technique to not get hurt. First off you must pre-dig with shovel or post hole about 4". Secondly you have to have to pull the auger out while spinning to clear the soil from hole and auger. You can only go about 1/2 the depth of helical blades before extracting the soil. It sounds difficult but it's easy to get into a groove.

...but you probably know this and asking for review of the HF Pred auger. As you know, 3 day rental would buy one from HF. I'm big on run frequency with small engines. If you are only running once a year, keep renting. But don't let that diminish what the HF Pred auger is, its fantastic.

I have the HF auger, works great but keep in mind it's 25:1 fuel mix so you'll have to mix a separate batch for it. I just reused a 1-quart TruFuel can and wrote what I'd mixed with a marker so I wouldn't dump it in anything else.

I've got the Harbor freight one man auger.

I've dug hundreds if not thousands of holes with it.

I stopped loaning it out, and for the guys who kept borrowing it, they all own one now.

Highly recommend.

As little as it uses I just use the pre mixed cans.

That little predator motor will spit a blue flame out running that stuff!

You have to be careful with them. I have to use one everyday for installing sentricon systems and if you hit at tree root or something hard, it can break your wrist in a heartbeat. Construction companies are bad at just burying their leftover bricks and i hit them all the time.

Yeah, I bought the HF auger as well. Needed to bury some 4x6 posts and bought the 6" bit to go with it. Little things a beast. Would recommend to anyone wanting a hole digger. Paid like $150 for it and the 6" bit.

As long as you are adding extra oil that's ok, these augers need more oil because of the gear-case bearing sleeve at the bottom of the engine.

Do any of those have reverse gears? Nothing like burying and auger down to the head then getting it hung up

Really? I did not know I should any extra oil. I've just been using the pre-mixed 25:1 gas and never thought more of it since that's what it calls for.

I appreciate the fyi.

I’ve got an Echo one man post hole digger. Bought it to put up my privacy fence 8 years ago. Not I only use it a couple times a year when planting plants in the wife’s flower bed (beats using a shovel).

I’ve done nothing to it but run cheap gas and Stabil. Cranks up every time.

It can be rough on your shoulders, but the worst is when digging a deep hole in heavy clay that is a little too wet. It’s a bunch pulling it out of the hole.
