My dad has an original Winchester in 38-40 so I’ve always liked that round. It’s sad that factory ammo for it these days is A. hard to find B. expensive as shite C. Geared only towards cowboy action shooting and much weaker than it should be.

Just to be different really.

I can respect that

Do you reload? The .38-40 can be as powerful as the .40 S&W.

Colt made some 3rd Gens in that caliber however I recommend everyone understand what makes a good SAA before buying a 3rd. Lots of 1st Gens in 38-40, including shooter grades. No 2nd Gens were made in the caliber.

I had no idea of this release. Watched a promo of the 509T and it looks awesome. Even comes with a 24 round magazine.

But top on my wish list is a PPQ45. I need a new polymer big bore.

I've read a bit on the cartridge. The old 38WCF can exceed the 40 S&W............in rifles.
There was hunting ammo made that was designated for the Model 92 Winchester only. Far too hot for the revolvers and even too hot for the old '73 Winchester. The ammo was made in the early 1900's but discontinued because shooters just couldn't resist blowing up their revolvers with it. So I've read.

It seems the original loading of the cartridge fired in a revolver was equal to the 40 S&W.
it's actually strange to me that this caliber even exists, because it is so similar to the 44-40, which came before it. I don't think the 38-40 brought any real advantages to the table in those days.

I wonder how many caliber arguments were held in general stores or what not in those days, or perhaps over the telegraph

That shiny blue S&W 586 just does it for me. I'd take a 586 over a 686 any day.

I really like the 9mm version but have a lot of 9mm handguns and want another big bore 45. The PPQ has excellent ergos and one of the best triggers out of the box so it's a solid candidate.

I have a Kimber but the mag capacity just isn't there like the FNX. But I'm found of the P227 Tacops... so it will a tough choice when that time comes.
