Just wanted some opinions of what is the appeal of the 5.7x28mm? Was looking at the rock pistol from psa. Most of my pistols are 9 mm and was just wondering what if anything makes this any better. The velocity and energy or not super impressive and the bullets are expensive as heck.

Fast and flat for a pistol.

ETA: Capacity and recoil similar to a .22 mag as well.

My buddy has a nice FN 5.7. Cool gun.

I have not heard the fanfare about the PSA 5.7 like you hear about their dagger.

Capacity is the advantage IMO

It has never really appealed to me. Very fast but small bullet. Just seems it would go straight through without much damage to me.

I've never understood it. Seems like the answer to a question no one asked.

The appeal comes from the single caliber guys that have a ps90, too.

If the ammo became cheap, you’d have a fun carbine bull pup that you can use the same rounds for the FiveSeveN.

Even though it is not a true rifle round, it is still intriguing and in my opinion better than a 9mm out of a sub2k.

It’s pretty popular overseas. Saudi’s use it as their official Army sidearm. Mexican presidential guard as well. I have read some stories on officer involved shootings with with round and it’s impressive.

A few FBI guys carry it. I owned both the FN and Ruger. Sold the FN. The Ruger actually has a better trigger out of the box. Ammo is pricey at around 50 bucks a box. It will penetrate kevlar to some extent with certain ammo. Very fast and flat.
I have come to prefer the 22 TCM over the 5.7. Much more stopping power. Recently picked up a Rock Island 1911 in 22 TCM. I hate Rock Island but they make the caliber.

when modified and turned into a wildcat, the parent case makes for a helluva varmint round. My friends re-size the necks to .17 and .20 caliber to shoot predators.
10 grs of powder push a 20 gr Vmax at 3,500 fps. Imagine, 1 pound of powder will yield 700 loaded rounds

here is a .17 Velociraptor (4.4x28) cartridge my friend created back in 2004. Recoil comparable to a .22LR

1.5" high @ 100 yds
0 @ 200 yds
3" low @ 275 yds

GB, You're ALWAYS on top of the sub calibers! I played around w/ having a 17 VHA (Varmint Hunters Association) gun made after reading about in their publication. As you said, it uses the 5.7 brass necked down to 17 caliber. I think it'd be the perfect ground squirrel gun. I never pursued it though as I was concerned about brass availability. If brass is available it'd be a highly effective 17 that'd be inexpensive to handload. How's your friend getting brass??

used brass listed on GunBroker. You can buy 1x fired brass for .10 ~ .15 cents each. He buys 500 to 1000 pcs. at a time as it's readily available. Deprime, tumble clean, anneal, re-size necks, then load. Custom rifles chambered .17's and 20's are my addiction. Mainly used to shoot crows, pigs, jackrabbits, and predators for the last 30+ years. Building another rifle as we speak

I had never heard of the caliber so probably would have never bought one. I won mine in a raffle. Holy shite it’s fun to shoot! Just wish the ammo was a little cheaper

you should learn to reload as it will save you $$

dies: $50
powder: $45 pound
primers: $8 / 100ct. ($80 / 1000)
bullets: $25 / 100
brass: you already have

cost per round to make:
.36 cents
$7.17 for 20 rds.
$17.93 for 50 rds.
$35.86 for 100 rds.

Factory FN is over $50+ for 50 rds. , American Eagle is $35+ for 50 rds. when you can find it

I want to get into it for a fun beefed up 22. Ruger pistol and the LC rifle would be a fun pair. Toss in a cmmg 8” upper or look at the dissent. Is what I’d like to do lol

Drops hogs and yotes fine with a head shot. But a .22lr will do that in many cases. It is mainly just a fun hot round to shoot, high capacity, although with high capacity comes high prices due to the ammo costs at the moment (although they appear to be "creeping" down, so well see.)
