This is something I’ve wondered a lot on and haven’t gotten much clarity on as everyone has an opinion. I shoot a modified choke as very rarely do I need to shoot past 35-40 yards and I only do two types of duck hunting:
Flooded timber for wood duck
Marsh Hunting in south LA in the brackish ponds
What does the OB recommend for these types of environments?

2-3/4" #3 for everything, improved cylinder for everything.

#4 shot is all you need. I’ve crunched birds out to 37 yards (past that as well but that’s what I’ve tracked with my range finder) with Kent 1 1/8th 4 shot. I get the best pattern with my benelli IC choke. #4 shot is plenty good for most of what you will see in the LA marsh

I grew up in S Arkansas hunting flooded timber and some bigger open water, occasionally would ride to the delta and shoot some fields. As long as I’ve remembered I’ve shot 3.5” #2 with long range choke…I did the majority of calling and called the shot so I rarely got in on the first few shots so I would try and pick off stragglers trying to get out of the decoys and if we went to the fields I had plenty of range and power to drop geese or long range ducks

Really like the 3” #6 Kent Teal Steel for the timber
3” #4 with modified for everything else

I typically shoot 3s, step up to 2s late season usually because I can’t find 3s. But they help when the greys start getting skittish late season.
As far as chokes, whatever is stuck in my A5’s barrel. I believe it’s Imp Modified, whichever one it’s not coming out. She’s performed exceptionally well this fall.

3 inch #2 or #3.
If I’m in a blind where we’re shooting ducks and geese the. 3.5 inch #2

Hevi-Metal 3.5” #4 shot, IC choke. Benelli SBE II

If I'm going somewhere out of state I like hevi 12 #4 or tss #6. But honestly my day to day shot is rio 1 3/8 oz #3s. If I'm hunting with friends I use s Mueller decoy choke, passing if hunting with clients.

3” 1-1/4 #4’s I shot either the Hevi- Metal or the Hevi Hammering with a kicks full choke.
SBE III
I also shot the Kent’s fast in the black box.3” 1-1/4 #4’s or I shot the #4&6 stacked.

Early season 3” 3, 4 and 5 will work. When geese show up 3” number 2s will shwack anything

4 or 5 shot for wood ducks / teal. 3s or 2s for the marsh. More often than not it’s 3’s.
