What performance should I be getting out of a 35hp GTR gatoetail on an 1854 hull?

I have this combo with a center console. Maybe 150lbs of “gear” between batteries, trolling motor, etc.
With just me I can get ~26mph max
Me and one adult: ~22 max
Add another adult and I’m lucky if I can get on plane. ~14 mph
It should be bettter than this, right?

Yeah that’s about right haha. Especially if it’s older the heads might could use a tuneup. Get a carb, head and bps exhaust and your load carrying capability will be way better.

Trying to tune mine was a pain in the butt. I had a new carb and a aftermarket stainless exhaust and it ran ok with just me. A little more weight and it was a dog.
Trying to tune that carb/choke rigged up on a governor was a PITA.

Yeah you’re getting what is average with these boats. The more weight, the slower it goes.

Yeah that’s why I let boat dr set mine up and it runs like a champ

That’s a lot of boat for a 35hp lawn mower engine. Like Timmmmmay said, if you want to carry 3 people in a boat that size, you’ll need a little work. But also try to rebalance your load...get the guys to move around and see if you can get another mph or 2.

I have the 37xd on my 18x54. I'm at around 24 with 3 people and hunting gear.

I have a new custom build 1848 with a L3 40 GTR XD from Delta Performance and with 3 guys, dog, 13g gas, 2 optima blue tops, wetsounds 10, guns, decoys, 75q yeti, 30q hopper, blind bags, dog stand, waders and other random shite and averaged 35.5-36.5 with a worked big blade.. Load placement and prop also play a big part-

Damn son. That's quick. Making me wanna re-check my speed.

Have dyno sheets from Delta on my motor that have it around 62hp.. Getting a worked big blade made a huge difference in jumping up on plane/pushing a load. Only have about 4 hours on it so, still have some tweaking to do but overall super impressed with the power these new motors have.

I had the same problem. Clean the carb. Boat ran perfect just no top end. Seemed like boat was plowing. Cleaned carb and back to 26/27. 1854 center console

I have the exact same setup. Alone I could get 26-27mph with gas tank, batteries, boat blind and decoys. If I put 3 250# plus dudes in there with that gear I would barely get on plane. Getting thinner friends was an option, but I decided to take the boat to the boat dr. I had a mikuni carb put on, iron mountain heads, and a bps q exhaust. Ran me around 2k. The difference is unbelievable. Gained maybe 2-3mph top end while alone, but loaded with 3 big dudes, boat blind, decoys, gas, 2 batteries, guns and buckets I can get out the hole quicker and run 25-27mph depending on the wind.

You must be an anesthesiologist with that kinda cash

Fellas must have some long runs for that spendy speed.

How’s your prop? You running 2 or 3 blade? When i got mine worked it helped me get up and added a few mph

I wish LOL.
I’m running a two blade prop now. I will probably look into a three blade soon. The biggest difference I noticed was the load carrying capability which was impressive

The 35hp stock was only 31hp to the prop.
Now the 40hp is almost 40hp at the prop.
To me its worth selling the motor you have and upgrading to the 37 or 40 vs spending 2k on an old one.
Also the boats make a big difference. If yours is heavy then its starting out loaded down before people and gear.

My setup is a gatortail extreme 1854. Engine is stock 2012 with a 2 blade prop. I guess I didn’t realize there would be that much of a drop off in performance with more than 2 people.
The main use is fishing saltwater marshes and some occasional perch jerking so outboard can do what I want to do 95+% of the time so I may deal with the GTR performance for a few years then swap out to an outboad. I really like the layout and fishability of the hull.
