I'm generally curious here, and slightly confused by this statement. Though, it makes me think your first statement is also one coming from a different usage mindset
How is this one a problem exactly? I always, and I mean always pulled them tight as I could before I started ratcheting, usually only 3-6 ratchets and that sucker was golden. Then tie excess length in whatever manner necessary to achieve the neatest, easiest, and most secure tie down.
It doesn't all have to wind up on the spool. Never seen someone try to use one with setting the length at the start, instead of as an afterthought.
Do you not reset on every use or something? Didn't know it was a thing not to. I've never seen it done another way.
Or maybe we are on two different mind sets regarding types of haul loads. I've carried a lot of random shite on several different hauling platforms with a lot of different people. From flatbeds, to pickups, to dumps, to box trucks, and an even larger variance of trailers.
I've never seen someone use a ratchet strap differently than the below configuration, made possible with steps following.
With the ratchet oriented so that the hook hangs straight down, and the handle opens up and away from the body when ratcheting. Ratchet the wheel till its straight up and down. Then the excess is pulled through the bottom opening in the middle of the ratchet center wheel, and pulled up and away from the action. Leaving a fulcrum point to tighten as much excess as possible. Then ratchet.
1) Release and unspool old excess. Some do it when taking off, others do it at start of next use. I prefer the former.
2) set non ratchet hook.
3) set ratchet hook.
4) pull excess tight in the same direction the action must be pulled to ratchet. While staying behind ratchet handle.
5) ratchet
6) tie excess
7) done.
Lot of words to describe my method, but I wanted to be clear as I could be, though I'm worried I over described it. Your statement just confused the crap out of me/ I've never seen it done in the manner I believe you are describing.
I feel like there is probably a youtube video that would have saved me a lot of typing.

I should have read farther. He nailed it, and used far less words to describe it.

Edit: And he had the youtube video I mentioned probably existed.
Edit 2: Nm, those stupid fricking brits still did it wrong. That method is fine for flat items, but for height, its better to use the method I complicatedly explained. If you can make heads or tails of it.

I was laying next to my sleeping wife when I watched the video Soni had the volume down. It looked correct to me with the way he pulled the excess slack tight before starting to ratchet. That's why I posted it.
But I'm with you. I've seen some people who unspool and respool a ratchet strap without ever physically removing the long end from the ratchet, so it's just spooling up on itself.

Works so good, gets all over everything. 1 dab is enough to completely cover your life in the shite.

That shite used to be put on work truck door handles, and plant phones all the time.

My safety harness. Nothing says awesome like fumbling with a tangled web of frick shite at 5:00 in the morning in the cold. If I didn't have kids and actually fear a 16 foot fall I would burn the damn thing and piss on the ashes.
That was an entertaining read!

My love/hate relationship is with the backup beepers/sensors on my truck. They either go completely apeshit when nothing is there or they don't beep at all and you back into a shopping cart at Dollar General.

Strap them over axles. if you strap it to the racks, the shocks will still allow it to bounce and loosen.
Our crew guys always have this problem with atvs on trailers to job sites.

This thread is perfect evidence of real life.
Every person I know besides 1 does not know how to use a ratchet strap. I've actually seen my brother cut them shorter because he didn't know to pull the tag end through.

Any tips?
Sit on the front end, tighten straps on front. Sit on the back end tighten straps on back. When you stop to piss..... Tighten straps.
Let the force of the shocks pushing against the straps help you.

Gloves- either too tight so I can't put them on easily. Too loose and have to keep pulling them up. Too thick and don't have good dexterity. Too thin and fingers get cold. Useless when wet. Just can't find the perfect pair.

The head of my weedeater has to be the most poorly designed POS I've ever owned. When the strings break, I enter into a deep depression.

Nodust – I feel your pain I am a glove ho and have lots ... best gloves for hunting I have are a pr of browning duck commander version that are 10 yrs old wish I bought 3 pr, every other pr just don’t measure up.
Vice grips – I love em and have multiple pairs and ya I know how to use them but I end up w/ skinned knuckles because I over/under tighten they slip and ......
Trailer wiring - I used to try and diagnose the issue, not now, check bulbs/contacts and I will put a fresh ground on and if that doesn’t fix it I rewire the whole thing in half the time it takes to find the broken wire .....

Summit Climber, love the ability to stay mobile and switch things up without it being a major ordeal or anyone else knowing where I'm at. Hate climbing up every hunt.
