There was a time when I could get 4B just about anywhere. Cant hardly find them anymore. That would be perfect to me. A 2 3/4" shell had 27 lead balls in it.

00 Buck in the tube ready to go if needed. Don't keep a round chambered because I want the burglar to hear that beautiful sound of the 870 getting cocked and ready

if anybody breaks into my house I don't want them to hear a thing.

I just want them to feel it

I agree that the rack of a pump shotgun will be a very effective deterrent to anyone.
I have hi brass #6 birdshot for in home use. Makes sense for some buckshot as follow up rounds though.

I promise that .410 #6 at close range is uniformly deadly.
2 home invaders from Grant Parish found out the hard way some years back.

My uncle had somebody in his house once and racking his shotgun definitely got the intruder's attention.

Regarding pellet size, I read an FBI article in which their preferred pellet size was #4 buckshot -- something about the balance between size for penetration vs number in the shell. Regardless of any of that, ANY shell would work inside a home because you'd have virtually no spread at those distances.

What is your shotgun pellet preference for self defense?I think birdshot is an excellent choice for home defense

Nope, not at 7 yards. #9's lose a lot of energy (and thus their ability to penetrate) at 7 yards.

Maybe for the 1st round, like Ace suggested.

People who worry about pellets passing through sheetrock walls need to understand that if a projectile it won't penetrate sheetrock, it's unlikely to adequately penetrate a home invader.

I think it's also reasonable to formulate plans based on a home invader being awfully angry, or mentally ill, or high on drugs. Most "burglars" look for unoccupied dwellings. Anyone who'll intentionally enter an occupied home is likely to be someone who won't stop until you actually stop him.

Remington 870 18", 4+1 00 Buck

I never advocate for using birdshot for home defense.
