What happens to guns that are seized?

Just saw a post on Facebook about a big narcotics bust. Well in the picture posted, there are about 20 or so guns that were seized in the drug bust. Got me wondering, what happens to those guns? Obviously the person getting arrested isn’t getting them back, so do they sell them or anything like that?

I think after any trial, they are supposed to be destroyed. But who knows.

in New Orleans they are damaged and dumped into the Mississippi River

When i was on, i took many drums of guns from evidence to State Property Control in BR, on Fouqua Street. They had to get the trustees out before i could enter.
The drums of guns went to auction. Not singles, but one would bid on the whole drum.
I know Jim ( Jims Firearms) often went see.

I immediately thought man I would love to have that win 94, browning sweet 16 and win model 12!
In my mind they are all mid late 50s to pre 70s models with very minimal wear!!!

I work with a guy in Texas that had several guns stolen from his safe. The guns were found in a separate bust, and I believe that he was able to get everything back after it was released from evidence.

All those guns were stolen and will be stored as evidence until trial. Post-trial, efforts are sometimes made to contact the rightful owner providing there is a police report with the firearm info and SN in the system. More probable than not, the SN's were scratched off after being stolen. If the guns can't be returned to the owner there destroyed.

Depends on what kind they are
My cousin is married to a guy who served as a sheriff's deputy for 30 years, he has 30-40 in his man cave.
Most were seized

The nicer ones somehow end up in cop's gun safes at their houses.

after they are no longer needed for court, they are "supposed" to be destroyed and melted down as scrap metal
but lots of times those guns go missing just like most of the drugs do

I did some work in the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's evidence room a couple years ago. The smell of weed was unbelievable. And they had rows and rows of guns. If I had to guess, over 1000 guns for sure. The lady in there said you get immune to the dope smell pretty quickly.
The room where they photograph evidence was pretty cool too.

It depends on the agency and the guns. Some agency’s do a swap out for guns that can’t be returned to owners for new sidearms. Barney’s does this a lot in La. Guns that have filed off serial numbers are destroyed.

These?
24 guns, magic mushrooms seized during Ascension Parish drug bust (on WAFB)
This haul of rifles with scopes and silencers, from Michigan, is very impressive.
2 Huron County men arrested during bust face drug trafficking charges (on www.mlive.com)

The reason I’d never be a cop is because no way could I be on a drug bust and not slip a couple guns, stacks of cash, etc into my personal collection

Most of those painted rifles are pellet rifles

They look like air soft guns.

I can tell u from experience that guns are held in an evidence locker until after the case has been resolved. After the case is resolved the guns go back to their rightful owner or are sold at auction or destroyed depending on their condition.

Most are sold at auction. We were often offered boxes of guns for cheap but they weren't worth it, usually only the crap made it for sale. I suspect the good stuff is rehomed via alternate methods.
