it works because it's unnecessary and would taste exactly the same if you didn't. but hey, don't let me get in the way of your family hog castrating tradition. sorry man, but i can't tell if you're bs'ing or serious.

I’ve never killed a boar that smells nearly as bad as a rutting buck. just saying.

I’ll tell you a true story....

Either a car hit one or someone dumped one on my road the day before thanksgiving. As of today, nothing has touched it! I mean nothing! No dogs, no buzzards, nothing

Rear Inside part of each ham and right behind each hock. They’re little fatty knots of tissue that meet at a point.

That's not how castration works bud. Once you castrate them they need to live and get rid of the testosterone.

I saw the same thing happen to a deer someone hit. I drove by on the way to work each day and watched it rot away. Never a buzzard on it either.

Any meat you cook down in a gumbo is edible.

I cured a boar ham in a mixture of water, tender quick, and brown sugar. I then put a heavy smoke on it to 165 degrees. I could smell the boar over the smoke when it was cooking. I gave it to a buddy who likes to eat rank stuff and he liked it. I went over to eat a couple weeks later and as soon as I walked in I could tell he had put the boar ham in the beans. It didn't taste too bad but the smell was revolting. The aftertaste was bad too. That was the first time I ever had that happen from a boar but I going to try and shoot sows from here on out

Eat it. I've eaten big ones & little ones, all taste the same. I do cut out the glands.

Those are lymph nodes, not scent glands. Deer have them there too (as do you and I.)

Scroll about halfway down this article for a diagram of where the scent glands are located.

Im not replying to any one person but the thread in general

There is so much ignorance in this thread it is humorous as usual.

Wether or not the meat tastes good or smells bad is all about what happens immediately following the kill shot.

Did the hog run for 200 yards and build up a bunch of lactic acid in the meat? Did the intestines rupture due to poor shot placement? Did it sit un-skinned in > 55 degree weather for more than an hour?

The sex of the hog and the size of the hog don't change the taste but may change the texture or toughness of the meat. Not including the differences in taste for the relative fat percentage that is basically zero on small pigs. Pigs of either sex under 60 lbs usually have little to no fat and the meat can be dry and LESS tasty if not prepared correctly.

The difficulty in handling a large boar hog, its ability to withstand more trauma and survive long enough to build up lactic acid in the meat, poor game meat care practices, and old wives tales are the reason people shy away from big boars.

care for the meat properly and it should be fantastic
