TOTW, bison. Actually will feed raw ground venison when I have enough on hand too.

I have a white German shepherd that seems to be allergic to everything as well.

BUT Ole Roy. No way in hell will I feed my dogs that crap...

I'm guessing you have a valid reason other than its cheap. I've fed it to my dogs for years and they are all perfectly healthy

There was actually a study performed that showed Ole Roy was better balanced for dogs than Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo is currently being sued because Purina performed testing and found that all that "quality food" contained large amounts of chicken by-product despite being labeled some special food. AuburnalumDVM is right, corn free and grain free is a unproven myth similar to gluten free diets. Yes dogs can have corn allergies but most common allergens are chicken and beef then likely corn and soy.

The canine digestive system was designed to process raw meat. Nowhere in nature do canines eat any grain as a normal food source. Most dry dog foods contain mostly grain and are like a poison (allergies, etc.) to a dog. Of course a vet will tell you that's wrong because they have been bought and paid for by the dog food industry. They also recommend vaccinating them for everything, also causing allergies and vaccinosis.

I feed my dogs raw meat from the time they are weaned. They are the healthiest (never sick - period), most well adjusted animals you ever saw. It's easy to do and no more expensive than good quality dog food.

I toss my German Shepherd a couple of raw chicken leg quarters (they can eat any raw bone) every night and a slab of beef liver a couple of times a week and he's good to go.

Easy.

Victor dog food.
GF Ultra Pro 42 Formula
Active and Sporting Dogs

Great dog food. Our 7mo old Dogo is right at 74lbs. He was on the Victor Nutra Pro 38 Active Dog & Puppy until 5mo. He digest most of it, and his turds are on the small side for a dog his size.

It has nothing to do with "cheap".

I'm glad your dogs are perfectly healthy.

This is one of the reasons:

Customer reviews of Ol’ Roy dog food formulas are very negative. The fact that Ol’ Roy tested positive for pentobarbital in 1998 still seems to prevent many dog owners from even considering Ol’ Roy dog food. Also, many dog owners reported that their dogs experienced health problems when fed Ol’ Roy dog food. Allergic reactions and gastrointestinal distress seem to be the most commonly experienced problems. The fact that corn is the first ingredient in Ol’ Roy dry formulas was very negatively received by consumers.

Reason for Ol Roy negative

They've probably cleaned it up..but I had a dog with allergies that was negatively affected by the corn/wheat/soy issue. I didn't even know about the phenobarb issue until I was telling my vet about what he ate...Once I swapped brands the dog's digestive system slowly recovered.

I don't have any substantiation but there's rumors at least that some of the ingredients originate from China too...again no substantiation..but after seeing stuff in some of the treats that originate from China, I'm not chancing it.

We fed our lab that recently passed at 16 years Eukanuba large breed puppy...

at the recommendation of the breeder when we picked up our lab pup(now 8 years old) we started her on Purina Pro Plan large breed puppy...

fed both of them Pro Plan shredded(now called Savor)after the youngest was off of the puppy food...

All in all I'd recommend either one...the Eukanuba or the Pro Plan

Yes, there are reports all over the web about Ole Roy's heritage and associated issues. That much negative publicity got me to thinking...

Now, I just stay away from it.

I've fought this for 11 years. Even Rx stuff did not help. Finally found Natural Balance Limited Ingredient food. Have seen a drastic reduction in my dog's ear issues.

Damn, I'm the only one that feeds Purina One. I get the lamb and rice, with some table scraps mixed in. And the obligatory slice of cheese. Never have had any issues and their poo is small like pro plan. And a lot cheaper.

Yes...had a black lab mix...she was on DVP NB Duck and potato until the Lord called her home. She was allergic to lamb...any other protein was fine..but she liked the D&P..so she stayed on that.

I was given Purina pro club member status, because my at the time bro-in-law worked for Purina(still Does)

I get $5 coupons all the time for pro plan so no big price difference for me...bonus bag =cheaper

Pro Plan

35# for $33.99 = .971 per lb(after coupon)petsmart
same for 38.5# bonus bag = .882 per lb (almost always available)

a big plus is I can turn in weight circles for gift cards etc...

Purina One

31.1# for $29.99 = .964 lb

no bonus bags offered

eta: to show price comparisons

***anyone want to save their Purina weight circles for me***
any variety is ok

Costco's nature's domain.

for a 30 lb bag, its anywhere between $28-$33, and is considered to be a very good dog food.

We use the Tractor Supply house brand grain free food "4 Health". Lab seems to like it and she doesn't itch as much with it.

LINK

We will also use Taste of the Wild when my wife finds it on sale.

Been feeding ole Roy for years with no problems. Dogs do fine on corn and grains, it's cats that must have meat in their diets, there's a protein or amino acid that cats can't synthesize that's found in meat.
