My dad just turned 60 and has one. He did fall out of a lock on about 5-6 years ago. Broke his L2-L3 and had to get surgery twice. He’s fine now but drawing back his bow hurts his back still.

With dwindling hunter numbers I'll take anyone who can humanely take a deer no matter what they use.

I bought one this past season during black Friday sales. Its hard enough hunting public land, especially from the ground, and I’ve been busted a couple times trying to draw back on my compound bow.

Which is tougher? Having cameras out all around a lease so you know whats there and when its moving, then riding a 4 wheeler to the base of an enclosed box stand and sitting over a corn feeder? Or “cheating” with a crossbow?

On my farm we have a whole 5 days of gun season; slug , pistol or muzzleloader. When I decided to take up deer hunting again all my friends talked about how hard bow hunting was so I decided to start with a crossbow.

It allowed me to learn the hard part of archery, things like getting in range consistently, picking locations with good back cover, using the wind etc without the added difficulty of using drawing a bow.

5 years in I went from happy to shoot a button to passing on young P&Y bucks. I then switched to compound and was glad to do so.

My 10 year old son killed his first crossbow deer and first buck 2 weeks ago. He got a compound for his birthday last week. It will be a year or two before he is able to pull 45#, the minimum weight in arkansas.

If he had to wait until he was 12 or 13 and learn all the lessons he has this year and the drive to hunt it might be too late. As it is he is hooked and already has a target buck picked for next year.

My daughter will start going with me next year at 5 and hopefully by 6 she will be able to handle the crossbow. If she hadto wait until she was a teen to kill a deer I would have no chance with her.

As for me, I destroyed my shoulder with baseball and softball. Most days pulling a 73# bow is childsplay. When my shoulder is acting up I cant raise my arm to shoulder level much less pull my bow. I dropped down to 63 to limit the off days but sometimes i just cant do it. Having a crossbow out in the shop means if the weather is right I'm going hunting even on the bad days.

How bout shooting a deer from 200 yards with a 2k rifle and a 2k scope from a lead sled?

This does not take skill either, which is why rifles aren't allowed during archery season.

So for you it’s about the skills needed for the weapon of the season at hand?!
My point was during gun season one group may choose to use a single shot open sighted rifle, does that make them superior men than the guy who uses a conventional HP rifle setup?
I don’t use a Xbow but just don’t get the hate is all.
I mean even on this board, I don’t really ever see anyone jump on the 35whelen guys with 50mm ballistic turent scopes and laser range finders hunting during “ primitive “ weapon season!
Maybe we should start a spinoff thread :

I don’t understand how some of you have time to care about such stupid shite.
I couldn’t care less what another man is hunting with.

I got one in my mid 50s, this was after I had a plate in my neck. But hey, your land or lease- do what feels right for you

My compound cam apart. It was old and was time to replace. I use to do a lot of bow hunting. But don't make many bow hunts like I use to do. So I bought a crossbow. It was no longer worth my time to practice before bow season to hone that skill just to hunt 3 days during the bow season.

I hate hunting with a crossbow compared to a compound. Cross bows are so much more dangerous it seems. Sitting all day with a cocked crossbow... it just waiting to go off accidentally and mangle a misplaced hand. Not a fan.

But I am not going to put in the time to be accurate with my bow so a crossbow it is.

I never really cared what others thought because I don't ever see people when I am hunting. Now I do care what others think. As I have gotten older and more ornery, I sort of hope someone sees me hunting with a crossbow and gets pissed.

i used compound bows for 35 years, shooting 70 lb bows. had to have shoulder surgery in my late 50s. bought a new bow with a 53 lb setup. had three cervical disks replaced in 2013. bought a xbow in 2014.
nothing i like more than shooting fat does with it.

Hell, you don’t even have to use recurves or long bows as an example. The first compound I owned, I was lucky if I could put one arrow out of six in a pie plate at 20 yards. LOL

Granted this was back in the 70’s but all the equipment has improved over the years.

If it’s legal and makes you happy, knock yourself out.

If they really want to stir it up, ask old school turkey hunters how they feel about decoys and blinds.
