My uncle that lives in Central Illinois told me the local sporting goods store sold 40:1 crossbows this year. I’m not convinced it’s that high, but certainly way more crossbows sold in 2019 then there was years ago. He’s grumpy already, but he thinks there’s going to be a major effect on midwest deer hunting. Many of the states have 3-4 month bow seasons and now theres all kinds of more guys with crossbows that can shoot further and require very little practice.

Eta: to answer the OP, no age for regular bow imo. I think they should be like a muzzleloader and have a special season or you can use them during gun. In order to shoot a deer with a crossbow you can have someone else sight it in, pull it back, and have it all set for you. You then take it and shoot it like a gun. That’s now bow hunting.

What difference does it make to you how other people hunt? It's legal, so get over it.

Social norms or the norms of a bunch of OBrs who sit around and criticize xbow guys yet hunt in boxes on greenfields with corn?
Why would I care what they use if it’s legal?! But hey I will shoot a duck on the water, use live bait to catch a fish, tree a squirrel with a dog and chase rabbits with a hound!!

It takes time, effort, and knowledge to train a feist or a beagle. The same does not go for killing deer over corn or accurately shooting a crossbow.

How bout shooting a deer from 200 yards with a 2k rifle and a 2k scope from a lead sled? I guess them boys with open sight lever guns talk shite about them and question their manhood?!
And training squirrel dogs and beagle dogs trumps training deer dogs...

I can say this: We have deer that are “Archery Only Deer” people with crossbows don’t get to shoot them.

What is the big deal? People use rifles aimed at corn feeders. There are a lot of them who post here. Talk about how they start shaking to shoot a white tail at sixty yards. Real skill

1 is basically a rifle up to 60-70 yards. The other is 35-40 yards an in.

Do y’all really think there is no difference between a crossbow and archery? I don’t think they should be banned or anything, but they aren’t the same. Just how newer muzzleloaders that can shoot 200 yards shouldn’t be considered “primitive weapons”.

Good job. I love when the corn pilers fight over their preferred method of take.

This. I have nothing against any way that anyone wants to legally hunt, but it's much tougher to draw a compound bow and shoot vs pulling the trigger on a crossbow with eyeballs on you.

I grew up where the only folks that could use a crossbow were the ones that couldn't physically use a standard bow, be it compound or traditional.

Rifle season? I don't care what you use.

Bow season? If you're an able bodied man using a crossbow, I automatically think less of you.

This. And kids don’t get a pass during archery season either. Waiting until you are old enough To do it right is a good thing.

So? Nobody says it is the same or difficult. The only hunters hat piss me off (joking) are compound bow hunters. Hell they have sights just like a gun!!! Archery season should be reserved for long bows only. Lets see you hold one back for 30 seconds. Real hunters use long bows. The way it is suppose to be.

See two can play this game.

I enjoy shooting them from time to time but I’m not interested in hunting with one. If it’s what you want to do and it’s legal who cares what others think. Personally I’d rather see someone hunt with a crossbow than to try to archery hunt when they are out of practice.

When archery hunting first got big, there was a lot of excitement about this new way of hunting. The same excitement never came about with the Xbow.

Legal now, so whatever.
