Purpose?
Budget?
Length?

Without knowing any of these, I'd recommend a Springfield Saint as a good starter option right out of a box.

Building your own is always nice if you have the time to collect all of the parts and the tools to do so.

It's not rocket science. It's more like leggos.

At the very least, buy the upper and lower separate. As I understand, venders have to charge an additional tax (11%, I think?) for a complete firearm. That would not be applied to separates.

Buy a milspec lower cheap somewhere, either stripped or complete (as pistol). Then buy as many uppers as you like.

Understand, the upper and lower is held together by 2 push pins, you will take it apart to inspect and clean it anyway.

If you're just getting a plinker or something 'just because', then a cheap PSA lower and a BCA upper will give you a pistol for under $350. I've got a couple of their side chargers, in both 556 and 7.62x39, they run great (you need the Duramags for the 7.62x39).

One with a 14" barrel.

Seriously, go shoot one before you buy if you haven't already.

None of them. What is the point of a 6in barrel? It's inaccurate, stupidly loud, and spits powder everywhere. You can't easily conceal or holster it. Like, I guess you can argue that you want the power of a rifle round for short distance engagements, but say goodbye to your eardrums. They're also really heavy when trying to maneuver with one hand in a car, etc.

10.5in is pretty much as short as you want to go with an AR. I just don't see the purpose of this outside of fun/novelty:

That's more than half the enjoyment.

AR pistols lose too much velocity and are too damn loud. Much better choices out there for a pistol if you don't want to build.

AR pistols are the alternative freedom definition of what is a short barreled rifle.

They are not “inefficient”. As someone who spent over 20 years getting in and out of vehicles/helos with full battle rattle, I was ecstatic to carry a SBR aka AR pistol (braced) when the option was available.

Everyone has an opinion like an orifice so you do you. I rock all my “pistols” in 5.56 ARs as I’m a sucker for interoperability of mags/ammo/manual of arms.

Prefer 10.5” as it’s good enough for killing any 2 legged threat you’ll meet and accurate out to 4 legged ethical shots.

OP didn't mention length, just "pistol"... I like my 10.4" barrels in 556 and x39. Pretty handy with a blade/fin brace and a red dot.
I wouldn't go smaller.
