Utility Trailer. Bill of sale only question..

So I'm looking for the wife an quad.
I will need a trailer. There are plenty that say "bill of sale only". Some listed like that have a license plate in the picture.
How would they be legal to pull on the street with no title? How would someone get it registered with no title? I've seen the license plate and assume maybe they stole the plate to stick on the trailer. Perhaps they run the trailers vetting they won't get busted.
Everything I've read is don't buy one without a title, etc. These keep selling so someone is buying them...
Unless they are all saying they were homemade and trying to pass them off to get the paperwork for em..

After dicking around with this exact topic for the last 3 months, I decided giving up buying used. I was going to save a couple hundred dollars and gamble on history, condition, risking not getting tag, etc.
I went to Mike Geralds and went home with a brand new trailer, piece of mind, they went to DMV for me, etc for $300-$400 more than most of the used trailers I was looking at.

If it doesn’t have any paperwork, run as far from it as you can!

Not sure how the law in Louisiana works, but I would imagine it is similar to Alabama.
So many folks "build" their own trailers that a title is not something that is/was readily available. My dad built one in the 60's when he was in welding school. In the 80's it became mandatory that trailers have a tag. He made up a VIN/ID number and stamped it on to the tongue of the trailer. Took it to the tag office and they walked outside and verified it. Applied for his title and paid for title/tag.
I would imagine with a bill of sale you can put the trailer ID on the paperwork and apply for the title, much the same way.

If they have lost the title, its not as big of a problem because they can get a duplicate title. If the seller isn't willing to do that, or if they never had a title, then fixing the problem will be much more difficult and expensive, but it can be done. Still, you'd probably be better off buying new than trying fix that kind of title problem.

This is the problem. People think their trailers don't depreciate

You can't...

That's basically where I'm at

Seriously, give them a call, there's one in Baton Rouge and one in Houston. Best prices I found in the region and they quote over the phone. Be sure to have them calculate TTL because it's a significant portion of the overall price. It keeps me out of the DMV, which is damn near priceless.
They are not just a dealership. They manufacture their own trailers and have a full shop so you will get a warranty. They can also do all sorts of modifications which I will probably have them add a few things over the next year.

if you are in Louisiana and they don't have the title, do not buy it.

That is close to being true, but there is a way, a very expensive way, in Louisiana at least; by obtaining a judgment instructing the DPS-OMV to issue a title in your name. There are myriad ways of getting such a judgment, but all are going to cost at least as much as a new, small trailer.

Bought a trailer four wheeler package with titles but never got around to taking care of the trailer or bike. The fine was as much as the cost of the trailer so it deferred to not pay. Eventually gave the trailer to my buddy and let him deal with getting caught. Unless you get into an accident with it i doubt the man will ever come after you but i wouldn't pay money for a non titled trailer.

If no title, the trailer is probably stolen at some point. It may have had the VIN removed, which makes it basically unable to be titled/registered. And no, you can't just say it's homemade without proving where the parts originated (axle etc). There is a plate on some of them because they just took the plate off an old trailer they had, but it doesn't match the one its on.

I don't know if for better or worse but its easy as shite to deal with a trailer in mississippi. I've had two trailers without and kind of paperwork. One that was actually homemade and one that had just some repairs. Both times I just go in and tell them I have a homemade trailer and give them dimensions and color and they give me a license plate. Like a 5 min process.

no title dont buy it, unless you want lawn art
if you dont find out its stolen, you will spend several days at the DMV sorting it out and spend a couple hundred dollars by the time you are done. in the end it costs you more then buying a new trailer to get a missing title in your name for one you bought.
one more thing, always buy something bigger then you "think" you need. i wouldnt go less then 12x6 unless its just for a lawn mower and nothing else
