I am going to need a tractor to take care of a little over 20 acres. It was formerly a horse farm, so it's pretty much all pasture with fencing and cross fencing.

I'm new to the tractor world, but I was thinking about something in the 50-60 engine hp class. It'll mostly be used on the property, not taken into the woods to prep food plots or anything. It's main function will be cutting pastures, but it will also be used for maintaining drives, hauling manure and other random tasks you would use a tractor for.

I've been looking at the new MX series from Kubota. Either the MX5400 or MX6000 4WD with a cab. I'm set on 4WD and pretty set on a cab. If i'm going to be spending that kind of time cutting pastures, I think A/C and a radio would be pretty nice. What other makes/models should I be looking at? Any recommended dealers within an hour or so from the north shore? Any to stay away from?

As far as implements, I am looking at a cutter, grapple, bucket and land plane for now. Maybe some discs or a rototiller in the future. Anything I am overlooking that I should consider?

I've been reading quite a bit on rotary cutters vs flail mowers. Anyone have experience with both of them? I think I would want something in the 8' class. I'm not sure if I want something on the 3pt or one of the pull along versions.

What's the best place to buy implements? What are some good brands?

You wont be disappointed with those but thats a lot of tractor for 20 acres.

8ft gonna make it a lot harder to transport also.

You could easily do in the 40 range with a 6ft cutter on that size property and save a lot of coin and it be easier to maneuver

We live on 90 acres that I maintain with a Kubota MX5100 4wd. The land is a mix of rolling hill woods, pasture, and food plots. I have a 6ft woods brush bull cutter. I wouldn’t want anything bigger or heavier. I have to keep the loader on to keep the front down. My tractor is 52 engine HP and 44 at the PTO.
I use it for cutting woods roads, pasture, disking, grading the driveway, etc. The loader comes in handy for moving box stands nor putting them up. I bought my tractor and loader at Seal in Woodville Ms. I found the cutter on Craigslist for 1500 in almost new shape. It’s 3k plus new. My next purchase is a grapple .

I'd rather have a little extra than a little less. I believe the only Kubota models that are smaller, that have cabs, are the Grand L series. The regular L series does not. The Grand L series tractors are much more expensive because of all the additional features. They seem nice, but think I would like the bigger tractor for less money.

8' is still narrow enough to be put on a trailer. Wouldn't it be shorter than a 6' cutter? It would be a twin spindle, so essentially two 4' cutters. Is that not right?

I disagree 100%. Clipping with a 35hp and 6' cutter sucks big time. I had used my nieces tractor that is a 100 hp with a 10' cutter. That cut my time down to less then a 1/3.

This. Also, I'd put alcohol in all of the tires for the extra weight and traction. I'd get a boom pole, too. They're handier than a pocket on a shirt.

I’ve got a 23 acre horse farm with (4) 1.5 acre paddocks cross fenced and most of the rest pasture with some hills to it.
I run a two year old MX5800 4wd open Rops,R4 tires, loader, loaded tires, hydrostatic tranny
72” Landpride land plane for dragging the driveway.
72” Everything Attachments grapple
12’ Landpride (RC2512 I believe) batwing cutter
6’ Frontier brush cutter

When I’m cutting I wish I had a cab but everything else I do which is a lot more often, I’m glad I have open Rops for getting on and off and communicating with my helper. I never use the small cutter as the batwing gets everywhere I need to.
The Landpride batwing has a little higher blade tip speed than the others (when I bought it, not sure if those specs have changed)and gives it a nice almost finish mower cut. It operates off one rear remote and is really good around ditches and other uneven ground.

I don’t think it’s too much tractor for that property but I value my time greatly. The folks I bought the place from were trying to maintain the place with a 30 hp 2wd and that 6’ cutter and the place was a wreck and the tractor was just beat to hell trying to keep up. The guy said he spent all summer cutting. I can do the whole place in about 4 hours even if I’ve let it get high. By having the equipment to maintain the place I’ve increased the property value way more than the cost of the equipment.
It does use some fuel at PTO speed when cutting but there’s nothing else I usually do where it’s running that hard for 4 hours.

I’ve got a great Kubota dealer about 20 mins away so that made it an easy choice. I’ve had about any other brand of equipment you can name and All of the Kubota stuff I like more.

If I were doing it today I’d get the MX6000. For cutting and potential rototilling that extra hp out of the PTO will make a difference over the 5400.

I visited a guy with a MX5800 and he had an 8’ 3pt cutter and he wished he had the batwing as mine is actually easier to go through gates, hook up and store when not using.

One other thing I’ll add is my favorite piece of equipment that is a 25 cuft ground drive manure spreader from ABI. Hands down the best purchase. Can pull behind anything and sling the crap. Easy to pull by hand around the stalls and muck right into it.

I have about 12 acers I use a bushhog on. Got a 25hp 4wd JD. Takes just over 3 hours if I don't let it get too high. But I am retired and not worried about time. Useful stuff, boom pole, box blade and love my roto tiller

See if you can rent a couple of different sizes and use them at different times when you need to cut. See which size works best for you on that place.

Looks like I'll be in the same situation, almost exactly, as you are.

I never considered a batwing, I just thought it would be too small to pull it. You don't have any trouble running it from your 5800?

I'm a little surprised at the people suggesting smaller, I figured tractors were like safes and shops...You would rather have more than not enough.

I live on 120 acres and have a 40 hp tractor. It does fine for me but I don’t have an unlimited budget like some of these guys that are suggesting $30k-$40k tractors.

I have a 5ft bush hog for roads and food plots, I pull a 6ft set of homemade disks and I put out 5’ round bales with it, no problems. I think a bat wing for 20 acres is a little excessive. Why are you clipping so much? Fence that shite it and put some animals out

OP, I responded and went into the detail because is sounded like we were in similar situations.
70hp would be overkill for what I do. If I was making hay I’d get a 70hp and it would still be nimble enough for all my chores. A 85hp tractor would just be too big for the day to day.
For the time I can spend right now on maintenance of the property it’s the right fit. One day I hope to be like HiiO and the time becomes moot. I may just get a lawn tractor, cart and shovel then.

We all have our own view of what maintaining a place really means. It’s a lot easier to “manicure” 20 acres than 100. A 1/3 acre lot is simple to edge and plant flowers and cut the grass with stripes, you get 3-4 acres and you just want to get the 72” deck and weed eat and call it good.

It works the batwing fine. The grass is really thick but I don’t let it get higher than about knee high but if I did I may have to slow down a bit but it’d handle it I’m confident.

I do have animals and I cut so it’s healthier for them. Also I’m cutting to try to build soil as the place was cut for hay religiously for at least 40 years and has very little topsoil.

I believe you’re on the right track. I’d get the 60hp tractor. I’ve got 54 acres and a 65hp tractor and it is invaluable. I’ve got 4x4, 8’ bush hog, 6’ box blade, 6’ land plane, pallet forks for the loader, & an auger.

My only advice is to go bigger than you think you need and don’t be afraid of used equipment. Depreciation of tractor equipment is real and surprisingly harsh.

This X10000. I cut 10 acres with a 30 hp Kubota and It fricking sucks. The tractor itself is great, but it takes soo long. get the cab, air, and higher horsepower in a Kubota. You won’t regret it.

Go with the cab and air. The MX series is my favorite size. Kubota has a rebate program going on right now where you get $500 off if you buy one implement (the loader counts) and another $250 off if you buy a second land pride implement. Also offering 0% financing. Find the closest Kubota dealer to you that has a service department you trust and work with that one. What area are you in?

I think I agree with you and some of the other posts here. I don't mind spending time running a cutter, but the less time the better. I don't know if a batwing would be a good choice for me because of future plans for grapes and fruit trees, but 8' sounds a lot better than 6'.

I haven't been able to check them out side by side, but is an MX series really that much bigger than a 40 class tractor, physically? From the videos I've seen, they seem pretty similar.

I'm not overly concerned about budget, it's something I plan on keeping for years. Which is another reason I like the idea of new...also no cabs previously in this class of tractor.

Anyone have experience with flails? Seems there is some good and bad reviews vs a rotary cutter. For the most part, I won't be busting brush. But I want to know that running over a few saplings won't be a problem.

I'll be on the north shore, in Folsom.

Before buying Kubota. Look into LS Tractor. Solid tractors, with and without cabs, much less than a Kubota. Check out Big B Sales in Sicily Island, Louisiana. Worth the drive and will save you big bucks. People come from Mississippi and other states to purchase from Big B Sales. They do package deals as well. Tractor, rotary cutter, etc. Seriously do not buy from anyone else without first checking them out.
