This may be a dumb question about hunting?

OK, I'm not a deer hunter but I have tons of friends that are and they talk about it nonstop!
I like reading about everyone's morning setup, but have any of you ever slept in a shooting house or something like that so you won't have your scent on the ground in the morning? Is that even legal to sleep in a shooting house or box?
I'm just asking because it seems like common sense but I've never heard anyone say they've done that. I know a lot of you guys are fanatics and would probably sleep in a tree swing if it meant a shot at a big deer in the morning.
Just thought I would ask. Good luck guys!

That seems retarded to want to sleep in a box stand, then again, I"m 50. I don't hunt out of box stands though. I guess if you have a real nice setup, want to get away, comfy mattress, big room, it can be worth it. I've killed plenty of bucks and seen plenty of deer come right up same trail I walked in.
fwiw, not calling your question retarded, again, I can see if it's a nice box stand it being a fun get away. I'd rather just sleep in my own bed
and then drive, walk to stand next morning.

Uhhhh frick no.
If I had to do that to kill a deer I would just shoot the fricker at night with the buddies I’m hunting with off the can-am while drinking a few mixed drinks.
It isn’t about just killing a deer to me. It’s everything from habitat improvements, fighting Mother Nature, fun with friends and playing a game of chess with an animal that may only make a 1-2 mistakes his whole life while beating your arse more times then you can count. If it was just about killing a deer most of us would just be an Outlaw.
I would never sleep in a boat every time I wanted to go duck hunting either, or my fricking truck for that matter.
Now, I do know of at least one place in Canada that leaves your butt in a little shack out in the middle of nowhere with only what you need for 5-7 days to live and a fricking journal and something with while you are hunting wolves. I was told your journal gets pretty strange after about being there 3-5 days by yourself and no other person to talk to.

Plan your stand sites for a stealthy access. I wouldn’t spend the night in a shooting house.

It’s not illegal. Like others just would want to get a good night sleep in my bed.

Guy killed a monster in KY during early bow season doing exactly that this year.
Crazy.
Crazy.

Serious deer hunters have a stand for each prevailing wind.

I’m sure it’s legal on private land. Never heard of anyone doing it though.

I figured there had to some hunters doing it, but I've never heard anyone talk about it. TBH, I thought it must be illegal, so that's why no one was talking about it.
Like I said, I'm not a hunter, but some of my buddies are hardcore hunters and will spend hundreds of dollars on seed and feed and days getting the plots and the camp ready, so I figured there had to be some hunters that would sleep in the cold, if it meant a shot at a huge deer.
I tried hunting one time on a really cold day because my buddies said that's when the big bucks are moving, but the only thing moving were the leaves and branches blowing in the wind, while I froze to death. So those of you who said you would never sleep in a shooting house, I totally understand!

quote:It’s definitely not illegal, now I can’t say for certain, but if history repeats itself and you walk into a 3rd-5th grade group of kids who hunt, one is talking about sleeping in a box stand to beat the deer there.

I’d never do it to shoot a deer for myself, I enjoy the camp as much as the stand at this point in my life, but if my kid asked me to camp out in the woods to be on the stand before the deer, we’re definitely doing it.

Ive got a buddy who has done it but not regularly. Most of my friends are partially retarded so it not really surprising. I can barely stand to sit still in box stand for hours let alone sleep in the damn thing.

Bill Winke had a YouTube video about doing exactly this, but he was sleeping in a bag on the ground, not a shooting house. The concern in noise on the hike in more than the hunter’s entry scent trail.
Yea, I realize you probably have no idea who that is.

Dang! I think it's a little extreme to sleep in a shooting house just for a deer, but sleeping on the ground is a definitely a no-no! With all the creatures that move about at night - not to mention the ground has to be uncomfortable and cold - I couldn't imagine waking up and a boar or coyote/bobcat is standing just a few yards away!

First deer I ever killed, it was pissing rain and I had a cheap rain suit. It sounded like rain on a tin roof, so very loud. Got pissed and decided the hunt was pretty much over, so I'm going to have a cigarette while I wait for sunset & my partner to finish hunting.
Cigarettes were in my jean's pocket, under a pair of coveralls, under a rain suit. I made all kinds of noise trying to get to my smokes, under 3 layers. My gun barrel was dinging off the climber stand and I'm wrestling my layers.
Finally get a smoke light it and sit back in my stand and there's a freaking deer, 25 yds away. Put the cigarette in my mouth, raised my gun and rolled her.
First buck I ever killed, walked down the game trail to retrieve my stand that was 150yds deep in the woods. Grabbed it from the tree and doubled back down the same trail. Found a new tree and climbed up. An hour later a nice 8 pt comes strutting down the same trail chasing a doe. He's on my wall.
I obviously don't play the scent game.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good! Those were some crazy stories!

I did this a few times because our lease was three hours away and the only camp within reasonable distance flooded that year.
An egg crate, and a heavy sleeping bag. It wasn’t nearly as bad as it sounds.

I've never sienr the whole night in a stand, but I have on several occasions woke up at 2-3am and knew if I went back to sleep I would never wake back up at 5am, so just went to the stand a few hours early and finished my nap
The woods in the middle of the night are terrifying, especially when you know there's not another human within a mile or so

Off topic but I can not stand the term, shooting house. Carry on
Posted on 11/25/23 at 5:42 am to lsushelly
I would do it but only if the shooting house had a bathroom.
I always have to take a dump around 5am.

I’ve done it a few times. My gf years ago would hunt with and sleep in the stand. It was a big 4x8 boxstand so there was plenty of room.
Killed a doe right at daylight once when she was with me. I had to wake her up before I shot it.
