Me and Unc will fish that friday before the tourny, but wouldn't mind going down before that

Hoping for next week and/or maybe week after that. I've never been there. I've always fished PAC. Hell, I may even go this Sunday depending on the weather.

Keep me in the loop if y'all decide to go down. I have never fished Cocodrie before so some prefishing is definitely needed.

You just paddle/pedal out to the lake.

Those familiar with west cove, do you know if yaks can fish the refuge before March 15 or do we follow same rules as motor boats?

I have always been under the impression that you aren't supposed to fish the refuge when it is closed, no matter what boat you are in, but I could be wrong. Maybe call LDWF they have a station right there and would have the answer.
Its 20-25mph winds and thunderstorms this weekend. More power to you if you make it out there.

I know it's closed until March 15, but I thought it's always closed to boats. They can only go in the cove.

It's literally this:
quote:
Launch: Free launch ramp at West Cove Recreation Unit on LA 27 south of Hackberry. *Note that the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge is closed until March 15, but you can use the launch and canal as passage into the lake only. Just don’t stop and fish any of the canals or marsh area in between.

It's always off limits to boats right?
Posted on 2/21/18 at 9:43 am to LSUlefty
I do not know the answer to that question.

Maybe just Outboards. I'm sure I've seen a sign.

Im almost 100% certain no outboards are allowed back there and no one is allowed from October 15-March 15.

Since I'm not doing the tournament I figured I'll try to help out some of the guys who's never been.
It should be noted that I consider myself pretty terrible, so don't take these suggestions as gospel, instead more of an attempt to get people to step outside their comfort zone and try some new places. Up until I started doing tournaments I had never really fished Cocodrie, PAC, out west, and a ton of other places before I got into this, but doing so made me better and taught me alot about looking at an area on the map and finding fishy areas. I'm still terrible, I'm just less terrible than I was.
I typically like to go northwest from the marina, the area has a ton of different features and options, I know of people who fish the east side but any little east wind and they get hammered.
It's kind of a big generic picture but get on Google Earth before hand and do a little scouting of your own. There's plenty of little ponds, run offs, drains, that are worth checking out. All those canals that run though the marsh tend to run around 5-6' and at the sharp turns get fairly deep, around 10'+, it can be worthwhile bouncing something off the bottom. Also near the banks of those canals get pretty shallow pretty quick, so tailing redfish cruising the bank can be spotted too.
