Nascar Fan,
I concur in the Remington 870 Express 12 guage as the starter shotgun. I bought one for my middle kid back 5 years ago and it is a fine handling, fine shooting shotgun.

I only know a handful of OBers, but I will without a doubt put Choirboy up against anyone here as far as knowledgeable outdoorsmen here. While everyone else here is shooting at pooldoos and grays in a rice field or marsh til 3 in the afternoon, CB has already put 4 green heads and 3 banded wood ducks in the bag, killed a 130 inch cull buck, cleaned 100 of the nicest crappie from the MS River backwater swamp , has supper going for the rest of the campers, and is 12 beers deep enjoying the evening sun by 3 PM on a given weekend day at the camp.

If you have the extra money, go with a 870 wingmaster.

They are just about a life time gun. I only went thru one to were it is finshed. Took about everything that walk swam or flew with it.

Great guns even for the older crowd also. Just bought another super mag. off a guy needing money. They even serve as a boat paddle if needed

Big time second on that motion

The wingmasters are exponentially more durable than the expresses.

You know it is a good gun when you can use it as a paddle or walking stick for 10 years and it is still in good shape

How much should I be spending on a 12 gauge?

What kind of shells are needed for squirrel/duck/dear? What about doves?

This is the least of your worries are this point, every one of the differnt species you listed to hunt requires differnt types of land, some might require a boat, decoys tree stands, clothing. The list is almost endless. Do you have any family with land? You will have to take a free hunter's education class before you can get a hunting license. You will learn a ton of info in the class...
