The Great Jack Rabbit Drives of the 1930’s

quote:
Sometimes you look back in history and certain events are just unbelievable. The rabbit drives of the 1930s are one of them. The drives were a result of the 1930’s dust bowl that ravaged the Great Plains. Over-farming combined with severe drought caused the topsoil to dry out and blow away during heavy winds. The result was a desolate landscape. With nothing to eat large numbers of Jack Rabbit descended on to the reaming farmland and began to wreak havoc.
Here is an excerpt from The History Engine put out by Richmond University: In an effort to control the rapidly increasing numbers of the jack-rabbits, whole communities came together and began to organize large parties in which the jack-rabbits would be systematically eliminated. Initially, they used shotguns, but this became dangerous due to a large number of people that turned out to these “hunts”. Eventually, it was decided that they would use clubs to avoid further injuries.

That’s good eating. Some of the most tender meat I ever fried up!

Ah yes I remember that. Such fun times we had back then.

Bet that was a whole bunch of squealing.

I’m sure they looked at it a little differently. Wake up one morning and see swarms of long eared rats chomping down the 40 acres I plowed with a mule and the soybeans I planted by Hand.
Bugs Bunny was such an a-hole when you think about it.

I was hunting Wyoming in the early 70s. We were driving home from an afternoon hunt and spotted a crowd of people sitting in lawn chairs around the edges of an alfalfa field. Next to every chair was a Coleman lantern. I asked a local guy what they were doing and he said they were waiting on the rabbits. Next morning on the way to our deer hunt we saw them again and they had a big flatbed with four foot high side boards brimming full of rabbits. They must have been walking that field all night. Their weapon of choice was a golf putter. The guy said they made money off of the pelts and sold the meat to dog food companies.

As a kid and teenager my dad was part of jack rabbit drives in southern Ontario. They used shot guns and a pick up truck load was common for a group of 10. This was late 40s early fifties. Rare to see a jack these days

I’d imagine that a smaller sized ( junior) aluminum bat would be the best weapon

while seemingly inefficient and arguably cruel, that had to be a bunch of fun.
I mean, I'm all for killing an animal in the most painless way that limits its suffering, but that's real life wackamole.

I was watching the Ken Burns dust bowl documentary the other day and they spend a good 5-10 minutes talking about this. Crazy.

I have plinked hundreds of armadillos and trapped hogs.
Have zero problem taking out all of these rabbits, but I think clubbing that many in the head may would take a toll on me pretty quick.
