What kind of crab fly is that? Looks nice.
The guy that caught the fish tied that one. I'd recommend checking out Sandbar Flies' fighting blue crab. The tan with barred hackle is deadly.

Thanks brother, you are definitely a tremendous help. At $7+/fly, they better be deadly! have to jump in after those reds if one breaks off!

Anytime! They're not cheap, for sure. You can find cheaper flies elsewhere (EP crabs, merkin crabs, etc.). I will say this though - and this is 100% truth - I personally caught over 50 slot fish on one of his crabs before the dumbell came loose. I put some UV cure on it, then caught 10+ more fish before the deer hair started ripping.
That's not to say every fly is a 50+ fish fly, but the durability is there. If the dumbells or bead chains come loose, drop some superglue or UV cure on it and call it a day.

What weight on the crab do you recommend?
One other thing, I had issues with my leader breaking this past weekend. it was a 30/20/14/12 tapered leader. I ended up cutting off the 12# section and just using the 14# section to tie the fly. Do you make your own leaders, If so, what do you use?
BTW, I've followed your advice/tips for all things fly fishing so far, and everything has been spot on. The royal wulff line Bermuda taper on the BVK cast really nicely, especially at a little distance!

It depends. If you're fishing over grass, bead chain works well. It keeps it out of the grass. If you're fishing in an area with less grass, it's important to get the fly down to the fish, so I'd get a 1/8 lead dumbell.
For redfish, I generally tie my own leaders unless I fall into a tapered leader for whatever reason. If I weren't so cheap, I'd always use Rio 20lb tapered fluoroflex leaders. I tie about 3.5' of 40lb mono, 1.5' of 30lb mono, 1.5' of 20lb mono, and 2' of flouro tip. I use double uni knots for each connection. I use the Berkley big game for the mono sections. You can buy the rolls at Academy or order them from Amazon. I use the Seaguar blue label 20lb fluoro for tip, or Seguar GrandMax if I need lighter.

Don't mean to butt in the thread, but if I wanted to try an inexpensive entry level fly rod for some freshwater fishin for bream or bass, what would you recommend? Some kind of combo maybe? What kind of flies?

I just bought a Cabela's 3 forks prestige 4wt for bream fishing. It was on sale for $59 for the combo with backing, floating fly line, and leader. Couldn't pass it up, seems to cast nicely!

Ok, thanks, I certainly wouldn't want to spend more than that. Academy has a Pflueger combo for $39. What kind of flies would you recommend?

Wooly worm, bream poppers, bream spiders, etc.

Do your leader knots drag in grass? I'm in Jacksonville, Florida so I don't fish saltwater with grass like that.

Sometimes. Knot sense over the knots works well. I pretty much never retie my leaders
. I've had the same one on my line since last fall. I just replace tip as needed.

Great little rod/reel for the price. I did the same thing last year.
Chase carp and some bream with it...A nice sized carp gives you a darn good run for your money.

I use this mostly because I don't trust my uni to uni connections and I can cut the tag end flush. I've still had the knots collect debris when there's stuff floating.
I enjoy your pics and videos. My wife hates them because she sees me eyeballing $1200 cameras. I tell her not to worry because I never find that many fish with any regularity...But I still want that camera.

In my reading last night, I saw something about stretching the line before you fish....Is this important to do?

I don't think it's necessary. But I'm far from knowledgeable.

the line or the leader? pre-packaged leaders need to be stretched a little when you get a fresh new one, or if you balled one back up and stored it that way. I just hold it by the butt in one hand and then stretch it through the fingers of my other hand 2-3 times till its not so kinked up.

Looking more into it, it sounds like they are talking about stretching the actual line that has been sitting dormant on a reel for a long time.
On another note: Does anyone have any experience or feedback on the Orvis Fly Fishing 101 classes?
Dallas is closest to me, Im thinking about making a quick trip over there next month to check it out one Saturday morning.
