After my outing I watched a few more videos and realized that I was going too much to the outside, not keeping my elbow tucked enough, and that my backcast was not snappy enough, causing the line to pool in front of me.
Question: I see that clouser minnows are very popular, especially for bass. Will the current floating line that I have work for these or will they require a sinking line?

I have one sinking line and never use it. You'll only need a sinking line if the water is deep. I use clousers in water as deep as 8-10 ft and floating line.

Thanks. Any change to leader and tippet or same gear?

May go a little longer on the leader/tippet if need be. Harder to cast but the fly will sink better.

I am planning on going in the am after reds for the first time with a fly. I am going to try it off of la 1 below Leeville. Anyone have any tips or flys I should try? I have a two man boat I will launch and it will be my wife's first time fly fishing so it is more of a training mission but my goal is for her to hook one. Any advice would be appreciated.

Got to take my new fly gear out today finally!
I didn't even bring a baitcaster with me, just my fly rod. I've been fishing for as long as I can remember and fly fishing definitely tested my patience more than anything I've ever done. Any way, I wound up with a limit of reds, all between 21-25". I broke off 3 times and lost 4 fish fighting them. I know I'm doing many things wrong, but I was happy to have success. Here a shot of the first of hopefully many.

Do any of you have comments on the Orvis 101 classes? I might make a quick overnight trip to BR or Dallas within the next month or so if its worth a look.

Well done. What brand of liner is that on the boat?

Hydroturf from gator trax . I think the pattern is duck grass camo. Pretty easy to install with a little patience. Cleans easily, doesn't obsorb water, it's cool and dampens .sounds.

Couple photos from the weekend. Actually did better today than yesterday even though it was blowing 12kts all day. Still caught yesterday, but the fish were being assholes.

Just got back from the Lower Mountain Fork in Broken Bow. The wife and I had a fantastic time. The weather could not have been better. The fly fishing was awesome to go along with the weather. I fished very briefly on Thursday, just to get the line wet and knock some rust off of the casting. I was using just a dry fly and had 3 or 4 hits but was rusty and slow to the hook set.
Friday morning woke up early and was the second person to Evening hole in the morning. Fished for an hour and a half and caught 5 trout. You could see the trout all over the river but they are heavily pressured in the area. They see a ton of flies daily, so getting a bite is tricky. By the time I left there were guides on each side of me and it was getting crowded.
Here's the one pic I took that morning.
That afternoon we decided to go hike at Spillway Creek and of course I had the fly rod in tow. Stopped at the first pocket of water coming off a small water fall. It wasn't long to land the first trout. I ended up catching 1 bass and 4 trout right there in a short amount of time. I kept the trout for dinner that night.
I don't have any pictures on my phone though. I am pretty bad at stopping and remembering to take pictures. My wife has more so if I can get those from her I may have some more to post later.
Saturday the park was packed so we ventured out to Area II to hike and get away from the crowds. We finally found a good looking spot so I started fishing again. I caught over 10 trout in less than on hour. That was also with my line breaking off once and having to re-tie. Almost a bite every other cast, it was a blast. I decide to keep some of the good sized ones. My last one was about 18 inches and caught on a dry fly. All in all a great trip and will for sure be going back.
I highly recommend anyone wanting to fly fish for rainbow and brown trout go there.

I just got my first fly rod and I am dying to get back up there. The guide I used said the big trout really come through in the winter when its cold so Im planning on hitting it again around that time.
I like spillway creek because you can easily get away from people.

Also, trying to figure out if I want a 4 wt rod or a 5 wt. Will primarily be used for trout and panfish, with the occasional bass mixed in. I'd love to go the 4 wt, as I like lite gear, but figure the 5 wt would be better all-around rod
As others mentioned 5wt better all around. For trout I mainly use a 3wt unless on I am on bigger water and need my 4wt as it will cast farther. I also use the 4wt when going after small mouth.
I gave my 6yo an 8ft 4wt St Croix Ultra Legend that I had. Told him if he could learn to cast it, it was his and back in February he caught a 16 inch rainbow on it in the mountains. Every chance he get he wants to take it out in the yard to practice.
