Down on 30A doing some fishing, and I had an experience today that made me get philosophical about exactly what we seek when we fish.
I had waded out to the sand bar in the middle of the day. Not really anything happening, and I'm basically practicing my double haul. Then I spot a school of bluefish that pops up to my right, working toward me to the left. I start casting to them. They're positioned perfectly at about the end of my current casting ability. So, I was getting my fly to the school about 1 in 3 casts. As a result, I ended up only pulling 2 fish out of this school that worked its way down the sandbar for around 15 minutes. I was pacing along with it, and it steadily stayed right at my maximum casting distance.
So: a school working around me for 15 minutes, and I only pulled 2 fish. That sounds pretty shitty. I've had schools start busting just off the shore and pulled fish steady for 30 minutes, hooking a fish with every single cast. Yet... this was way, way more satisfying. The fact that I absolutely HAD to make the right cast just to get within the zone of these fish made it really rewarding.
And them's my mental meanderings for the day.

It was an issue that they were having with some of their Alpha 3's
I've witnessed the drag lock up solid on an Alpha III. One run and it was donezo. I have another one sitting on my desk as I type this that has a sticky drag and a bent frame from a drop in the boat.

Oh yes. See the striper pics above - tHe big one was caught on a spin cast and the smaller on my 8 wt. The latter was more satisfying. That's what it's all about and it's why we get hooked on this. I live for sneaking all stealth-like along a stream that demands perfection in my approach and presentation.

Any if yall familiar with airline policies regarding fishing gear? I know you can bring your rod and stuff on board but what about hooks and shite? Do they allow that?
Posted on 7/9/15 at 12:04 pm to JumpingTheShark
Yes. You can carry on your rods and reels. I fly half a dozen times a year and have never once had an issue carrying on rods both in tubes and in a safe passage case. I always check my fly box. I have never tried to carry it on.

I've carried on trout flies with no issues. I haven't tried big stuff though.

Has anyone fished the Conejos on south central Colorado. It is just above Chama, NM?
Trying to finalize mid August.

I went fly fishing crazy about 5 years ago. My sister moved to Idaho/Montana and I went and visited for 10 days. Got the fever. I live outside of Asheville, NC where there are a bunch of great opportunities to fish so I went all-in. Since then I have 'invested' in:
- Scott A3 9' 5wt (first rod. good M/F action for the kind of fishing I do)
- Lamson Guru 2 (first reel. solid)
- Simms Guide Waders
- Simms Riverside boots
Then I *needed* more gear to accommodate other situations:
- Scott G2 (7'6" 4 weight for mountain streams)
- Lamson Velocity 2 Hard Alox reel
- Sage Z-Axis (9', 6 weight for out west and throwing streamers)
- Anither Lamson Velocity hard lox for the Z-Axis rod
- stupid money on flies, packs, fly boxes, gadgets, etc...
- Renzetti Traveler (Nice fly vise for tying flies)
- a set of guide pants waders...
The moral of the story: Fly fishing can take over your life lol. I think I spent $7G in two years getting geared up and now I'm so busy with life/work that I haven't been fishing in 18 months. Man I miss it.
EDIT:
Oops. Forgot that I traded in my car (BMW 5 series wagon) on an FJ Cruiser so that I could get down the tougher fire roads to hidden spots, so whatever that cost me too. Fly fishing is like golf: You can go crazy and spend tons of $ in no time.

Just wait until you start traveling to fish salt. We are in the process of booking a GT trip, it's nauseating.

At this point I have in think 18 rods (just fly rods) and reels for each. Now I built most but reels aren't cheap and I can't build them.

Lol I have 3 rods.
3 wt, 5 wt, 8 wt-- all I've ever needed

2 through 12wt with several in the same weight. Some are for friends to borrow. If they get broken they have lifetime guarantee and easy replacement.

Have you really used the 10-12?
I see myself more likely to use a 0.5 or 1 wt than those two
Oh yea, to all of the other FF regulars here: I'm pretty happy this thread has been doing well so far. Could you guys help me compile some beginner resources, videos, etc... to post up on the first post so that people can easily access them without feeling pressured to ask for that kidn of help. I know some of the orvis videos are good but I don't know what else is out there. I think we could really help others get into this.

10wt through 12wt are good Tarpon rods. I know a few guys who throw a 10 wt for redfish. I have a 14wt and 16 wt, and even they get used a few times a year.

Ah, I forgot about those beasts. Still on the list for me. I reckon they'd snap my 8 with a quickness

Used the 10wt several times. Only played with the 12.
Built it for a specific trip to the keys that fell through.

What blank did you build the 12 wt on?
Posted on 7/9/15 at 10:03 pm to Barf
St Croix legend elite I believe. Most of my rods are that blank.
The 12 is paired with a Van Staal.

LOL. Not really, just a guy that went full retard for fly fishing. Interestingly, my wife had zero problem with it. She just wanted me to have something besides work that I spent my time on. She's a good woman.
