Anyone here have any experience with 3-Tand reels?
Everything I've read about their drag and overall quality has been great, but I've fished long enough to know that a lot of reviews are bullshite, and there's lemons from every factory. With that being said, I'm new to fly fishing and this will be my first setup, but I'm interested in a quality reel that can take a beating at a somewhat mid-range price point. I really like the Galvan Torque, Nautilus FWX, and these 3-Tands.
This will mainly be used for specks/reds and tripletail, but I'd like to bring it offshore to mess with chicken dolphin as well. I feel stuck somewhere between the 8-10W range, which is kind of why I'm leaning 3-Tand; being able to throw their 9-10W spool on their 7-9W reel just seems like the most logical answer. Most likely going to be paired with a Mangrove 9W
Sorry for the long post, just trying make an educated investment. Any advice would be seriously appreciated.

I'm not familiar with that brand at all. My biggest question would be how much drag surface does the reel have? I only have one fly reel that has an enclosed drag and that's a Van Staal 12 wt. I hate to say that I've never used it as it was intended. Bought it for a specific trip that was cancelled.
All my other saltwater reels (that have been used fairly extensively) are all cork drag. Never had a problem with any of them. They range from Bauer's to Tibor's.
They all have a pretty massive drag surface.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

From what I understand, two of the main guys behind Van Staal and ZeeBaaS launched 3-Tand.

3 tand can't even walk down the street in Galvin or Nautilus' neighborhood. Their pliers are alright though.

I'll take your word for it, but what makes you say that? Also, outside of Galvan and the Nautilus FWX, what else would you recommend for specks/reds/tripletail?
Shoot me straight, I'm just trying to get a solid setup

Thanks, I saw a ton there last time but they were really spooky. We'll see if I've gotten any better since last time.

How much can you spend on the reel?

OB Fly Fishermen, please build me setup.
1. Would like for rod and reel combo to be around $250
2. Will be used for redfishing
Thanks.

Too much for just a line holder. I fish in the mountains and tend to never use the reel to land the fish. So my reels are 10 years old. A couple are from my grandfather and are probably 20-30 years old.

300ish. Something around the equivalent of a Curado/Chronarch.
I figured a saltwater reel would be a lot more than just a line holder

Alright, need a setup recommendation for my boss. budget for Rod/line/reel is $500. He's looking for a 5 wt, preferably something he can have in hand by EOD Monday. Cabelas, bass pro, and orvis are localish.

3 Tand reels are mostly dressed up Van Staals. The Van Staal reel failed predictably, they should have stuck to making pliers. They are not of any better or worse quality than any other of the made in China reels like Cheeky, Allen, and a few others.
In the same price range you have reels like Galvin that have stood up to the test of time. Galvin reels are proven and will last a life time. Some people poo poo on Nautilus a little bit because their turn around can be slow but the reels are made in the US and they are some of the best in the business. I would even go as far as to throw in the Orvis Hydros even though it's Korean. Even the Orvis Mirage is Korean but both are undeniably fantastic reels for the money.
Will a 3Tand hold up? Probably. It will probably be just fine if used moderately. However, will it still work if you drop it while landing a fish? What if it hops out of the rod holder while running in a little chop? I have an Allen reel on my desk that got dropped in the boat and rendered it inoperable. It's sitting next to a Tibor that has been dropped more times than I can count, it even spent the night in the surf in Mexico and survived. That Tibor looks and functions like new. The first trip out with that allen killed it.
Personally, if it were my rig, I would buy a cheap TFO reel over the 3 tand and use the left over money to get a better rod. If you're going to buy a cheap Chinese reel, buy a cheap Chinese reel.

Surprised that no one even mentions Lamson reels. I guess they're not big in the saltwater community. For freshwater, they're excellent bang for your buck.

Waterworks Lamson reels are fantastic.

Allen's Omega reels are made in the U.S.

The reel I have on my desk is an Alpha III. I have never seen or handled the Omega reel but that interchangeable drag is a pretty slick idea, especially if Allen will sell reels without the drag for cheap. That way you could just drop the drag into another frame without having to spend $600 on each reel.
It's in a tough spot priced along side Tibor, Abel, and Hatch. I'm interested to see how they preform. The interchangeable drag might be a game changer.

As far as I can tell it runs just as well as a Hatch 7+. I've run them both. I actually prefer the sound of the Omega better but that doesn't mean a whole lot. Start up inertia is equally as smooth on both.

Lamson. Sealed conical drag that's smooth As silk. Lots of guys like the Allen reels too

You can get a dope setup for 500 if it's a 5 wt for freshwater.
Best fly line imo is going to be rio gold but it'll cost $75.
My 5 wt is a TFO BVK and I love it. Cost $225 I think. But considering you're going to spend likely no more than 50-100 on the reel (I wouldn't anyway for a 5 wt) you got 70 or so left over. Cabelas will have all of the above I'd think.

Btw, if anyone is looking to pull the trigger on a high end saltwater rod, mrfc.com has sage at 50% off right now in their clearance section. I bought a Winston from them last year at half off. I think they also have lamson vanquish feels like 40% off which is unheard of
