Looking to purchase a new four wheeler soon. I’ve been looking into the Can-am Outlander 570 as Hondas have been hard to come by.
I’ll be using this for yard maintenance(leveling, spraying, etc) and some recreational use (trail riding, nothing extreme).
What’s the OB’s opinion on Can-am as a whole and specifically the Outlander 570?

Have only driven them a few times but never owned one so this is just my opinion. Great to drive with plenty of power. But for me, I Have two Honda atvs from 1998 and 2009. Both run as if they're brand new. The reliability of a honda is hard to beat, so I'll never switch.

I had a can am maverick 1000 that spontaneously burst into flames. I brought the completely burned and melted cage (all that was left) to a dealer and can am flew a guy down to investigate. Nothing came of it, but they did ultimately put some verbiage in the manual that said something like, if you ride in high water with debris in it, you should remove the plastics around the exhaust and clean it out. Apparently this situation has a bad habit of collecting floating sticks and leaves and impacting them around the exhaust that is right behind the seats. Once it dries and you heat up the exhaust, it will catch fire.

They did nothing for us other than say sorry and change the wording in the manual going forward.

Maybe that is on me, maybe not, but I won’t be buying another machine that has a standard practice of making you remove the seats and most of the plastics on a regular basis.

That’s crazy. I can’t believe they didn’t offer some kind of compensation, even if small.
I won’t be going in high water with whatever atv I get. Mostly for work around the house and some play but not going to sink it.

I was into the mud fest type thing for a while. My take….. Can ams are great machines when they are running. Power to weight ratio is fantastic. However , everyone seems to agree that they are high maintenance machines. My opinion is a Honda may not be as sporty or high performance, but is a lot less maintenance . Honda can’t be beat for longevity.
Just my opinion. If your just creeping around the yard a Can Am may last forever. A Honda surly will.

As a Honda owner x2, I would continue to look for a Honda, even a more recently used one. I selectively purchased two (2) used Hondas several years ago (2006 and 2017 models) and both simply run, only requiring bares bones maintenance, i.e., oil, filters, batteries, etc.

Look at the number of old Yamahas & Hondas still running like a top compared to old Can Ams.

That's enough for me to stick with the first 2.

I have a Can Am HD9 sxs and I love it. I was between that machine and the Honda Pioneer 1000. Same deal - always had Honda fourwheelers and they were always bulletproof. I was pretty set on the Pioneer until I drove the HD9. There really is no comparison with comfort/ride/general features of the machine compared to the Pioneer.

That being said, if I bought a fourwheeler, I'd buy a Honda.

Give Suzuki a look. They’re just as reliable as Honda and would be perfect for your needs

2009 650XT Max. Amazing suspension and have logged many a mile through NM, Colo, and Utah with it. Have never wanted for more engine. Replaced Fuel pump and added power steering. Also changed the rubber breather sleeves to the transmission case that dry rotted.

I bought a new Can Am Outlander 570 XT in 2017. Just sold it last summer because I just didn't get to ride it like I wanted. I would not hesitate buying another. The power is such a glaring difference compared to the Honda's.

I bought a Can-Am Outlander 1000R and I couldn’t imagine buying anything else. The smile it puts on people’s faces in sport mode

Can Am is designed for joy riding/mud fest etc and great for it. Anything designed for that will be high maintenance however.

Honda is designed to be a reliable workhouse

I have one of those in green, it's a great bike.

Having said that, in just one picture of that bike is fricked up.

Front brake drums aren't even installed, front differential seems to be leaking, front transfer case's definitely leaking down the sides of the motor, the rear pinion seal is currently leaking and honestly looks like it's barely holding on from being in two pieces, steering stem bushing and bearing are likely bad given the front tie rod ends are so loose the tires are toed out.

I guarantee it has no functional rear brakes either.

It's easy to say things are bulletproof when you ignore everything that is wrong with it

A foot shift irs rancher 420 pre emissions would be my pick.

Otherwise, the 86 big red is the most reliable honda utility bike.

As for the op... A canam will either never break or be a money pit. There is no in between.

My buddies dad bought a commander 1000 when they first came out. It was only two weeks old and had only been driven around the yard, caught on fire from grass thatch on the exhaust. Luckily the front door was open when it happened so we saw it light up and put it out.

If I couldn’t buy a Honda, Yamaha would be my very close second.

My 96 300 runs like new. Never owned a can am but drove a buddies years back when like the 800 or 1000 (or whatever came out) and holy shite that thing was fast. I would imagine the upkeep is pricier on Can AM but what do I know.
