I disagree. I could not imagine throwing an 11wt at any size redfish and I also could not imagine catching slot reds on a 9wt. For slot redfish I often use a saltwater 6wt but only when the weather is cooler so I don't end up killing the fish. The most widely recommended saltwater fly rod size is an 8wt. It will handle most any size redfish, bonefish, etc.

I'd get a 7-8wt. Be fun enough for bass and you can still catch reds/specks on it. I'm not a big fan of Orvis gear but the H3s do throw really nicely. Look at the TFO BVK 9' rod and an Allen Fly Fishing reel. Not entirely sure what your budget is but that would get you a really nice setup to see whether you enjoy it or not. Also, don't skimp on fly line. I really like the Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper.

I posted this in the last fly fish thread, and got well actually'd, but this is for a guide for someone just getting into it

I'm at the beginners stages of getting into fly fishing, last year I went and talked with the guys at Orvis and they gave me a lot of useful info, they also do a class on Saturday mornings at some point if you're near one.


The gist of what I was told was:

3wt set up for pan fish (think ultra light)
5wt set up for trout and smaller bass (medium to light)
8wt set up for big bass and redfish (heavy to medium heavy)


The rod is much more important than the reel.
Orvis's beginners combo has a really good rod, but a pretty terrible reel.
Cabelas had a beginners combo with a RLS+ reel, which I'm told is a good reel, but the rod is bad, this is the combo I went with (RIP Bargain Cave)
In hindsight I'd have gone with the Orvis combo

You won't know the difference in good and bad until you get into more expensive stuff though

It's ironic that fishing is literally my #1 passion but I just can't get the hang of a fly rod no matter how hard I try.

I bought a setup a few years ago ($150ish) but I haven't figured it out although I live right next to a park pond where I try to practice with it quite often. I keep on getting that "whip" effect and literally popping the flies off the end of the tapered leaders. I've definitely lost more flies than successful casts I've made.

You are trying to hard to make it happen with arm strength.

10 to 12 arm motion is all it takes. Let the line do the work.



ETA: I was horrible for years. About 2 years ago I spent the day with a professional guide and another really good fly fishermen. In about 10 minutes they improved my casting dramatically. I suggest casting lessons. Youtube vids can't correct you in real time.

Of course they do, they are $900

I've been watching the internet for another H2 1 piece now that the H3's are out there and one thing I've noticed is the price for a gently used Recon is really good. In my opinion the H2 and the Recon are really close. Maybe even too close.

Actually Its all in the hesitation and the line pull down. Its actually very easy with a little practice. Keep trying
