I work offshore. Smoked and dipped for years. Five years ago I stopped bringing both offshore. Since I'm not a bum, I didn't bum for two weeks at a time. Cold turkey with the Copenhagen in one hitch no problem. I still struggle with the Marlboro Lights once I crack a cold beer or pour a glass of whiskey.

Its a damn tough thing to do. At least it is for me. I'm over 60 and dipped since I was 14. I have stopped for periods of time but have always picked it back up. Like someone said earlier.. "You have to really want to quit" . stopped dipping for 3 years once and went back. Stupid! Anyway, I'm in process AGAIN. Good Luck.

If you are really serious and have the ability to do this it will help tremendously. When you have the urge to dip put some running shoes on and go for a run until you feel a head rush or exhaustion then walk back to your house. It will help replace the nicotine craving with a head rush from exercising.

I got you beat.. I smoke too.
2 packs of Marlboro lights and 1 can of copenhagen long cut runs me $24.54 every 2 days.
Good luck quitting.

I think it’s a little bit of both. Nicotine is just addictive, and the feeling of having to have something in your mouth is hard to get over. I heard this is big for smokers trying to quit, but chewing on toothpicks really helped me quit dipping. I don’t know why, but it was relieving anytime I had a toothpick in my mouth. Gum wasn’t even as effective for me. But I only get the crave to dip, when I’m hunting or fishing, at a baseball game, or on a long drive.

For the third time, you can’t quit if you don’t really want to. I’ve quit multiple times over my dipping career, would go 6mths +/- one can purchase and back full swing. Finally I had enough, tried the Zyn 3mg nic pouches. Did that for ballpark a month then quit that too. Finger counting, right back at 6mths off it now lol. Gonna stick it out for sure this time though. Good luck with it.

you sound a lot like me when I quit. I did it for insurance purposes at work. My wife and daughters gave me a lot of grief about quitting until I finally did.
Cold turkey was hard. I went to the Smokey Mountain Snuff. It has helped me bc it tastes like crap and has made me now associate dipping with that crap.
I still use the SM some like hunting and fishing or working around the house but not more than 1-2 a week probably. That was 3 years ago.
Most days I don't think about it anymore but I'm not gonna say I never do.
But it will get better. I haven't slipped on time in 3 years but when I'm around my buddies that dip it sucks!

In my experience, quitting is very easy. Just make the decision and be a man about it.

I've quit a bunch of times. Probably will again soon, and again after that.

Staying quit is the hard part. My dad always said I was hardheaded and didn't have an ounce of quit in me. Guess I proved him wrong!

prices are over $8/can

Off topic but I was absolutely floored at the store the other day when the guy in front of me asked for 2 cartons of cigs and the lady said "that will be $175.00"

I had not damn idea cigs were so expensive as I have never been a smoker or dipper.

Yeah man. The silver and gold lids are $8.89 per can in Oklahoma at Love's. You get a $1 off if you buy 2 cans, but it only brings it down to $8.39 per can. No further discounts for buying a roll or whatever.

I enjoyed dipping. I'd throw a dip of Copenhagen in and be able to drink beer oreat and not spit. I'd still be dipping right now if it didn't get so damn expensive and I'm a cheap, stubborn a-hole.

I quit about 3 years ago, my mistake was replacing it with sweets and cola and i gained 50 lbs. It will be a daily struggle, just gotta find something else to occupy your mind with.

yeah I forgot to mention that I gained a lot of weight also.
Not sure what was healthier. Dipping or being FAT!

I'm almost 10 years removed from it and if anything its getting worse lately.

I also gained a bunch of weight when I quit. Lost most of it since, but definitely got fatter.

One of my sons’ is using a dip type product that helps him stop dipping. He’s dipping but, not dipping….so to speak.

is it the chemical addiction of the nicotine or the physical motion habit of dipping

I quit using Cope about a year ago and went to Smokey Mountain Classic, no nicotine involved.

You hit the nail on the head with that question for me, there was a physical addiction to the nicotine and a psychological (physical motion habit). I still use some SMC but not much, a can every week or so. It's getting better and I may be using the new stuff for a lot longer but it's better than tobacco.

Better question. Why quit?

Does anyone on here know anyone who has had cancer from dipping?
