Holy shite does that suck. Had no idea how painful they were.

Hot water helped but it was about 2 hours of steady pain.

Already bruising and looks like a softball today.

Think I'd go to the Physician, to safeguard against infection.

I floundered the other night and they were everywhere, this was in Florida. But I'd never seen so many small ones randomly. These were about the side of a large grapefruit or so. Too small for my liking, not school up either like they get sometimes.

I feel your pain! Got hit in the hand one time and couldn’t make a fist for two weeks. Sorry to say you are going to be hobbling around for a while.

infection

I've witnessed vibrio onset first hand. Usually the area begins to darken within the first couple of hours. I'd just keep an eye on it for any discoloration. Maybe apply bleach or some other anti bacterial (probably have done this already)

We're in Port saint Joe. We cleaned it and inspected it as best we could. No stinger in there we can tell.

Cleaned it real good. Peroxide and all that.

Keeping an eye on it but may go to the doctor when we get back home tomorrow.

My theory is that they're more sensitive to oxygen depletion than other species and head shallow when it gets really hot. A couple years back we camped out on cat island during a heatwave and there were thousands in the shallows. The next week there was a jubilee.

Got stung by one in grand isle this time of the year last summer. Was told they spawn in late August and September along the beaches which is why there are so many right now. Hot water worked for me and wasn’t too bad after a few hours, good luck.

Nice cankle. Was at GI doing the stingray shuffle yesterday, expecting to get hit every time I waded in. Never saw the first one.

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but the truth is you didn't clean it at all. It's a stab/puncture wound and it can't be effectively cleaned from the surface. That's why it's swelling. There's toxins deep in the wound. If it's just the normal toxins they carry on their barb, you will probably be okay. But in case there's any vibrio present you need to get it looked at immediately by someone who knows what to look for. Good luck.

i'm gonna be wearing shoes from here on out. I know it seems like they would hit you in up on the ankle but I guess because the size of them they all hit in the foot.

A leather boot MIGHT stop a barb if it's a small ray or a glancing hit. But I've seen strikes that went right through a pair of tennis shoes or wading boots like they weren't even there. That barb is sharp and the strike is so fast and hard that even some of the cheaper designed "ray proof boots" won't stop it. If you step right on the head of a 16 inch diameter ray, you better be wearing a proven brand of ray proof boots that extend well above the ankle.

Saw about a dozen last weekend off of Timbalier while cruising the shallows.

All of their wingspans were about 4 feet. Dont even want to see the damage those could inflict.

I have an old pair of white Reebok high tops from probably mid 80’s that. Always wear when wade fishing or flounder gigging and I shuffle my feet. These old shoes. Are older than my marriage but I keep them on a nail in the garage and pull them out on occasion.

I read a story a guide wrote in a fishing magazine, practically begging people to wear ray guards. He got hit by a really big ray when he was wading in chest deep water 300 yards from the boat. His statement was that the pain was so bad, and he got so sick, if it hadn't been for his clients he doesn't think he would have made it back to the boat without drowning.

I thought he probably owned stock in Ray Guards, but then I was wade fishing in the Galveston surf and saw some commotion on the beach. It was a guy that had been hit and was puking his guts out. That's some serious pain. We get quite a few fishermen hit in this area every year due to the popularity of wade fishing in the Texas surf and bays.
