Was it you who suggested I buy the big Stihl pole saw?

Hell idk

Mine is only about 5 years old, but it's a "homeowner" grade saw with a bazillion and a half hard hours on it and it still starts and runs better than it did when it was new. It's just too damn small

I just looked on the website and the 311 and 391 weight the same. Sure didn't feel that way. I guess they're just balanced differently because of the bar lengths.

This for real?

Yes sir.

ETA: I'm not saying you won't find one, but our distributor doesn't have any anymore. They've stopped making them. If you CAN find one, get it and sell it to a logger. They're paying prime dollar for them right now.

The pro should get a little better efficiency if I remember right. Plus they cut like absolute animals. I have 2 pros and one normal and the pros cut like animals compared to it.

The 261 has a "better carb". Meaning, it's EPA compliant. Meaning it is a bitch to get running right.

The difference between pro saws and comparable regular ones is pretty basic. You get a better anti-vibe system, lighter weight components, and a 'better' carburetor. Under ideal conditions, the carb is better. In our humidity, it isn't near as efficient and is usually more prone to problems. They're finicky as hell.

For regular homeowner use, there is no need to get a 261, especially if you're comparing it to a 311.

So now let's discuss the 311 vs 391 since you've talked me out the 261

Not very often, but I'm from the "bigger is better" crowd.

You think that 0.2 hp will be very noticeable?

When you're running a 25"? Yeah. Its not just the HP, its the entire design. The 392 will run a 25" better than a 311. Whatever you do, make sure the bar number is 3003 xxx 8822. That's the "pro bar". Its more aggressive.

I'm not saying you can't run a 25" (that's technically what stihl makes) bar on a 311 by any means. I see people do it from time to time. I just think that in the end you'll be happier with a 391.

Yea I'll defintely be running yellow label bars and chains regardless of what I get.

I was under the impression that the 392 and 311 were pretty much exactly the same, with the 392 being punched out to a few more CC's with a decompression valve.

I'm not as concerned with how noticeable it is with a 25 as I am with how noticeable it is with a 20

I wanna say the 391 has more anti vibe points as well. The decompression valve is a small but great feature . Don't pay any mind to horsepower. It matters but on handheld equipment, CCs will give you a better idea.

What kind of price are you getting for the 311 and 391?

Yeah that's good. Go with the 391 and work them down on a case. Get the synthetic oil. Should be 12.60 for a 6-pack of 1-gallon mix and that'll give you a 2 year warranty.

Go with the 261. I bought the 260 pro right before katrina and have had zero problem s with it. Starts on 2 nd pull everytime and chews through most everything I throw at it. Yet it is also light enough to climb trees and trim limbs with.

That's the standard. All homeowner products double warranty with a 6 pack of synthetic mixing oil. If you have a company you're buying it under, you not only lose the 2 year, but go down to 90 day.

Nah I'm not buying it under a company name. It's for personal use only. I just have a really big tree that I need to tear into and don't have nearly enough bar to hack it. I've had to pass on lots of good trees the last two years because I just didn't have enough saw for em and I'm tired of it.

2 years is significantly more than I thought I'd get and that helps a wholeeeee lot.

It's realllllll hard to make myself fork out enough money for a rifle on a tool, but I can't make any money off a rifle.

If you want enough saw for 99% of what you'll run into as a homeowner, go 391 or 362. 362 is overkill but its a bad arse saw. 391 will do all you need and then some.
