What do these go for? My buddy told me they are well over $700, and I can't justify paying that much for a saw. I don't need to cut THAT much wood. I split this shite with a maul

Just get you a yuppie splitter to while you burnin all this cash.
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:53 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
Depends. They just screwed with the pricing. I think the 20" is 650 but I could be off.

A yuppie to swing the maul for me or a splittler with an internal combustion engine?

Yea 5 hours on the back end of a 12 pound maul would probably kill your average yuppie.

El Dorado? If its the dealer I'm thinking of he's a good dude.

Haven't been in for a while. Wife got me a pole saw for my birthday and she said they where nice and helpful. She just knew I wanted a saw on a pole and it had to be a Stihl, and the biggest of course.

I broke the handle on my splittin maul Saturday, thanks to a knotty log.

I think the "bigger is better" thing is gonna break me one day

I am a husqvarna man myself but you cant go wrong with a Stihl, thats about all Ive got.

Get a 460, no doubt in my mind. I have had a 200, 360, 440, 460, and 660. Hell I've burnt up 5 Home Depot saws including the farm boss. You can run an 18" bar like a wild man on a 460. It can run all of the way up to a 36" bar with no problems. Used them all when I was cutting trees professionally.
Save up a G and get the 460
If you don't want something that manly, make sure you get an even numbered saw. Those motors have been used for the longest and tend to be the most reliable. Get a 3/8ths RS chain if you are just cutting regular wood.
Don't be a queer and get a Husky. They run too high rpms to be reliable and don't make the torque that a Stihl does.
Eta: If you think those little ones are heavy, try stabbing a live Oak stump with a 60" bar on an 088. FML that is hard.

Beyond overkill and you're only half right on the even numbers. For the 441 and 251 that's true, they're newer motors. The 362 isn't and it blows away the 360 and 361. The 311 is a slight redesign of the 310. Other than a better anti vibe and different air filter, they're the same saw.

I ran a 440 with a 24" bar most of the time. Brought it up on roofs, in trees, and up in a bucket truck with me. It really isn't that big of a saw. I ran a 32" bar on it once. Didn't do it again because it had a hard time pulling it.
Had many times where I had to use the 36" bar and even double cut a good bit with it, hence getting the 660
I'll take half right over zero right
You will never regret getting the 460. It is a lifetime saw. My buddy with the 088 also has an 090

While I'd love to have a 440, we're getting way outside of my price range. Itd just take too long for a $1000 saw to pay for itself with what I'm doing.

Yeah...but its an LB7...injectors will need to be done every 2 or 3 years...at 250 a piece I might add...you only ever put OEM Bosch injectors in these...remans from anywhere else are junk

Ok whats the verdict?
Which Stihl is the OB's "saw of choice"

I wouldn't buy without running both for at least a couple hours. I ran through a bunch of residential Echos and a Stihl and finally sprung for a 67cc pro Echo 25" and while it's a heavy sumbich, I've been very happy with it. But I borrowed one for a day to make sure I could tote it all day and that it was worth the price tag.
