NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -
The state of Louisiana is planning to ban the taking of female crabs for two months next year in an effort to bolster declining crab numbers. The move comes on the heels of an outright ban earlier this year.

If you love Louisiana crabs, it's getting harder and harder to indulge. Crab landings are down and crab prices continue to rise, in part because of a depleted resource.

"Across the state we have problems with wetlands loss, and that's critical habitat," said Pete Gerica with the Louisiana Crab Task Force.

A look at the numbers shows the decline in blue crab landings in Louisiana. In 2015, Louisiana crabbers caught 41.2 million pounds. That was down from 43.3 million pounds caught in 2014, and 20 percent lower than 2006, when 53.3 million pounds were taken - an all time high.

I'm good with it. Gotta do something to protect the resource.

Which is crazy bc the last 2 years have been stellar in MS waters.

I agree with the video.

either limit the traps or keep setting seasons.

Last spring out of dularge there must have been 10000 traps from the landing to lost lake.

I think I saw that crabs breed and grow quickly. Put protections in place to increase crab sizes and numbers for the future. Hell 75% of Louisiana's catch is shipped to the east coast because they have killed their fisheries. Most of the big crabs are shipped because the will pay more up there than the people in Louisiana...

I'm sure it'll be males only one day just like it is here.

Is there a size restriction at all?

No limit for recreational crabbers?

I would think recreational crabers catch a very small percentage of the total harvest where it probably doesn't matter

It makes me wonder. I know several people who crab. I'm sure you're right but why not implement some restrictions to sustain them?

Around here I know even more. We may not affect it a lot but I know of a lot of crab being pulled out of the Columbia river near the ocean.

over 10 years ago, I took a couple of WLF commission members on a couple of duck hunts - they said in the next 2-4 years something would have to be done. Lots of folks went to crabbing when gill nets were banned. any of you that plied the coastal waters know full well back then you saw maybe 1/20th of the crab traps you see on the water now.

I applaud them for doing something.

it's actually a great idea. CA has banned the take of female dungeness crabs for years, and we have no shortage. Towards the end of the season, not many males left though.

I say shut down the crabbing for more than 2 months. Give it a one year rest for a proper bounce back

so crabbers are expected to not have an income for a year?
