I took the Bowhunter ed course to be able to bowhunt federal lands. It was a great experience. It is sad that they dropped the requirement. I did the extra to be able to hunt which is why I and so many were so pissed when they let X "bows" into the season.

That course should be mandatory if you want to sling an arrow or bolt just like hunters ed is mandatory to use a gun. There are basic skills that most that bow hunt don't know. My neighbor lost 7 deer with his bow this year alone. He cant shoot for shite and his setup is garbage. (short draw, light arrow, huge dull mechanical, shite tune on the bow) There are thousands of people like this out there.

Do k ids in Louisiana not take hunters safety in middle school anymore? I took it in 8th grade and shot my clays out back of the school with the Resource Officer. This was St Charles Parish.

That is my biggest grip with a lot of "bow hunters". I know of a couple guys who wound several deer every year in the Midwest and give the excuse of the deer are just so much bigger and tougher up here. Ducking BS.

YES, THOUSANDS OUT THERE like that. It's peer pressure. If you use anything but what is styling, you will be the outcast of the friends group. Sharpening and semi daily touch up is not done any more. Its a shame. All those lost deer. I only shoot fix heads, and i keep them scalpel sharp.
Its so easy. This season i began shooting the Wasp Hammer 125. And i keep them scary sharp. Since 1986, the blood trails i saw this year were unbelievable. Its all about Sharpness, like that rubber band jig demonstrated.

Peer pressure also effects the shoot don't shoot situation. Your buddies kilt 2 so far . You gonna try that shot you know you should not be taking. You gotta appear on face book with something.

One must overcome all of this. Hunt for yourself, and put conservation back into the equation. If the shot is iffy, even on a 145 buck, pass. Hunt him again another time. It is Just a deer.

Any idea of the specific area? North or south? Behind the levee?

I’ll respond to you on this since I figured you’d take it the best, just want to share a true story on the subject, not arguing the point, just trying to tell the other side a little bit.

About 20 years ago I was riding a crew boat to a platform and there was an Alabama boy loudly going on and on to anybody that would listen incessantly complaining about all the coonasses ransacking his town, screwing all their women, shooting all their deer, blah blah blah. I said wait a minute, where are you right now? He said I’m working, I said why here? He said because the mill closed , no way to make money back home. To shorten the story I’ll summarize the rest. I said so you come down here the day before, stay in hotel, visit a local bar, occasionally make some head way with a local girl, work your 7 or 14 on, go home with money for the family all thanks to our resources. I also see plenty of your boats down here in the summer additionally enjoying our resources. Also, if the mill’s closed who’s pumping millions of dollars a year helping to keep your town alive? Sounds like a hell of a deal to me.

Of course he couldn’t continue with his argument and it turned into the ole whatever, F you face, but that was the last I heard from him. Did it help? Probably not with him, but everybody else seemed to get something out of it

That's real! I need to thin my does out but didn't do it because I'm concerned I will run out of ammo.

You can really tell the difference between the Rapides and south western end of Catahoula Lake and the north old river/French Fork LaSalle area. Those self proclaimed cajun baws come up from Avoyelles and thats where you hear about the wild stories from the lake from. Granted a lot are good baws.

One of the biggest problems of youth/new Hunter recruitment is the industry has convinced people you can't kill deer without the $1000 Mathews bow/$500 scent control suit/$3000 Quietkat electric bike/ozonics/designer camo/etc. People just get intimidated by what looks like a second mortgage level investment just to get started.

People are hunting for the likes and for the accolades, not because they just want to hunt. In other words, if Instagram didn't exist, the general feeling is that there would be a lot less people hunting and less pressure on the best public spots.

This is also true. If I'm gonna waste money its gonna be to go in the safe or toward land or toys to use for hunting. Not on bows and scent control suits.
