Interesting, but Mr. Jimmy Bryan is the Bryan of Bryan foods. Exceedingly deep pockets.

That being said, I may call MSU and see about getting them to come and look at my farm and give me a plan for quail.

Research in GA shows it [decline in quail pop.] is tied to an exponential increase in raptor populations. Does the MSU research mention that at all?

I’ve heard the decline in quail is linked to fire ants, feral hogs and proliferation of coons.Change in farming practices is probably a big factor, also.

No, there is an obvious problem, covered much earlier in this thread.
So many years have passed since the better days, that multi generations have been born and grew. Most of these folks do not know the better days, they only read about it in history. Hunters then were more just plain rural folk with a rich hunting family. Mainly food supplement.

Today, its like an ESPN game. Stardom, look at me. Do what the " in fad " dictates. Whole different crew. Its over, pretty much . For those that were there in the good ole days, just reminense on those times.

The landscape has completely changed for quail. People had small farms and weedy fence rows and burned their woods and created perfect quail habitat.

Now when people get “weeds” on their fence line they spray them which takes away all cover for a quail. The woods are now industrial pine plantations with nothing but pine straw in the understory Nothing to eat. Herbicides have taken the place of burning. Quail don’t stand a chance in many of the places they used to inhabit

imported grasses are a huge issue.

feral cats wreck havoc on quail too.

oddly california quail can thrive here.

Changes in farming practices and suppressing the historical natural burning of forests in the SE US has pretty much sealed the fate of the bob white.

Not enough miles of fence rows between small family farms and underbrush growing too tall under the pine trees doesn’t leave enough cover to protect them or food for them to eat. Over 90% of what a quail eats is less than 18” from the ground. Walk through a pine plantation and tell me how many seed bearing plants there are in that range.

ETA: Dammit Ron, you typed faster than me.

How so?

Simply put, the industry uses the animals and fish disingenuously to sell a bunch of shite no one really needs.

Bass fishing led the way.

Well, yeah, if you pay attention to this nonsense. Hunting is still going into the woods to track and find game. There is more game now than even our grandfathers had (mine was born in 1903). Don’t let the knuckleheads ruin it. Don’t give them the attention. We live in a marketed world. If someone can advertise it, they will. Stop listening to the noise. Buy products you believe in.

It’s like saying football is ruined because the NFL sucks. The nfl sucks because of terrible rules, and business deals. This doesn’t ruin football. I love my college’s team and high school but never watch on sundays.

I obviously have a different point of view than the majority here.

True, he has no doubt spent a lot of money on changing his habitat from cattle/row crop to native grasses.

Dr. McConnell is super nice young man. He's also the nephew of Ralph Abraham who ran for Governor in Louisiana.

Absolutely, along with the normal ground predators. I know at Prairie Wildlife, the biggest thing was turning back the clock so to speak on the habitat.

As mentioned earlier, Mr. Bryan had the financial ability to take acreage out of row crop and cattle pasture and return it to native grasses.

Dr. McConnell maintains that loss of habitat has been the number one factor though.

While I do agree that hunting is in a golden age, I do believe culturally things have changed for the worse.

One thing I believe to be a problem is the lack of camps. As a child, I would guess being at the camp was the same for most here. It was where you really not only learned to hunt, fish and shoot, but it was where you also learned to get along with others and be respectful.

We could all use a healthy dose of that from time to time.

Agreed. I suppose one of the issues I see these days is the "pro staffer" syndrome.

I get several friend requests on FB each week and I'm always amazed at the number of people who have a pro staff affiliation listed in their information bio.

Do you believe that this desire to prove their worth to these companies interferes with the pleasure of hunting?

My own personal experience has been one that has run the gambit, from being proud of a production that told a good story, to shame over how some turned out in the end.

This is where I run afoul of trail cameras and baiting personally. I have zero problem with hunters using either tactic, but for me it appears it's taken some of the fun out of the sport.
