Someone explain why a double jet is better than this?

I’m looking to get a new burner for crawfish. Ideally can use it for other frying, but have an old Turkey fryer that works if not.

Everyone I talk to says to use a double jet. Just looking strictly at the numbers, most double jet are 180k Btu.

This one is 200k btu, but not a jet burner. And more quiet. What am I missing? Are the Btu not is important as I’m thinking?

The noise.

Seriously. That burner flows more gas than the 180k double jet and therefor, heats stuff faster. Been saying for many many years now that jet burners are stupid.

either will work, its all about the regulator on it.

Change the regulator, and you'll get a lot more than 180K BTU out of it.

I've got a bayou classic similar the one in your link. It's great and I'd bet it heats to a boil just as fast as the neighbor's jet burner. I think it helps to have the flame spread out rather than in one spot.

Edit to add: I need to perform a side by side test one day. Might do that next time we boil.

I had to look mine up. It's the bayou classic banjo. Per the www, it's only 164,000.

I used to use an old rusted out fryer and it would blow flames half way up the sides of the pot. In fact, that's how it got it's name as the "witches pot".

My buddy asked to borrow my pot a few times and he went and bought a double jet burner for me as a thank you. It shaved maybe 5 minutes off getting a 100qt. pot boiling.

In other words, a giant fryer like that will work. Something about kicking those jets on just feels right though and over time it would begin to add up the amount of gas you save I'd think.

Yes I’ve gathered everyone says to do that (which I will), but could apply the same logic to the 200k btu burner as well and get even more than 200k btu. And still not having the noise.

I just didn’t know if there was some weird science-y reason why everyone says jet burners are king - I.e. “it concentrates the flame, which does x”

Seems like there’s not really a reason why they are better form what I’ve seen thus far. Perhaps just a thing of the past.

The double jet burner is about $50 less than the big fryer on the same website you linked.

You can only shove so much gas through a jet. It is an orifice, and at some point you are just making noise and not actually flowing any more gas no matter how much pressure you put behind it. It's just going to make a shitload of noise.

Having 50 orifices is going to allow a higher flow rate at a lower supply pressure and less noise while additionally spreading the heat out.

Jet burners only exist because some coonasses figured out you could drill out a grease zerk and build your own burner for free. Otherwise, they make absolutely zero sense from any kind of technical standpoint. Banjo burners are superior in every way.

If you put it on blast it is, but those are much better than a typical grease zerk jet burner. It's actually usable at lower flame and can really put out when you want it to. I like them a lot.

We use one of those for everything from 35gal jambalaya to boiling.

I have been using my grandfather’s old homemade grease zerk jet burner that’s probably older than me. Uses a bunch of propane but gets the job done just fine

I have the same one and even if it happens to take longer (which I doubt) it’s worth it to me to be able to hold a conversation next to it without yelling.

Not sure I would call them stupid but definitely not needed. BTUs are BTUs.

Works fine in comparison to the jet? No noticeable difference?

I don’t even care if it takes a few minutes longer to boil.

I have a Bayou Classic M#KAB4 which also has the banjo style burner and it’s rated for 210k BTU. It gets a 120 qt pot to a rolling boil just fine. Been using it for 3-4 years now. I’m sure the one you linked will be just fine. I even use it to fry fish because I can get the flame so low. Win-Win in my opinion. Plus it’s just so nice being able to talk next to it on full blast.

I have one of those large diameter banjo burners. Bought it for beer brewing. I went thru a tank of propane in 2 brews where with the smaller burners, I'd get at least 4+ brews out of a tank. Its sitting in my shed providing shelter for spiders now.

Good replies here but I'll add that it's not just about BTU output. It's about the BTU's you get to the water in the pot.

How the pot fits on a burner, how the flame spreads on the pot and wind screens etc. can factor in too.
