Bad pic. My wife (no pics) took it. Near my house.

It's harmless. Is this the only photo?

It's a plain bellied water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster).

It might be, but if it flattens its head and body out to appear that short and stubby with that color that close to my house, it’s a goner.
And I never kill non-venomous, and have been known to even let venomous go in the wild

Seems like there are vertical lines on the face. I’ll go non-venomous

Yea, Teague! I got that one right even if I didn't post a comment.

Exactly it. Not a full proof way to ID but from a distance those lines on the jawline give way to a harmless water snake.

The tail looks short and fat. I vote moccasin

It’s a terrible pic and without knowing where you’re at I’d say eastern hognose.

Well you would have killed a nonvenomous snake here.
It’s a plain-bellies watersnake showing its defense mechanism by flattening out and pretending to be a moccasin

I think its this.

If it comes into contact with my wife this would probably be its fate....I'd probably have played with it a bit to see if I could see how aggressive it was....I could get to a point for sure where I could call it a water snake and would probably relocate it.

It lived to see another day. My wife took the pic and ran. We live in luling near a pond on the course.

Yeah, just step aside and let it go next time. Keep the kids in the house for a couple of hours. The snake will not chase you into the house. It will not open your door either.

One day they will learn that’s a bad idea when dealing with humans.
