Snake ID - Snake Bite Edition

This just bit my buddy twice on his bare foot.

dry bites are pretty common with copperheads. In any event get your friend to the doctor just in case; severe pain and swelling would be expected but any further damage is rare

Per grok-A copperhead bite is painful and can cause significant local tissue injury, but it is rarely life-threatening in healthy adults who get prompt medical care. Copperheads are the most common cause of venomous snakebites in the U.S., including Louisiana, yet deaths from them are extremely uncommon

Yup - copper.
The bad news is your buddy got bit by a venomous snake. The good news is it was a copperhead. If you have to get bit, that’s much preferred over a cottonmouth, rattlesnake, or coral. In most places, antivenin isn’t a certainty for a copperhead bite anymore.
If you want to avoid getting bit, you just grab them by the tail like this…

if he has insurance, hes going to want antivenom. else he might be on pain meds for a month.

Meh…a buddy of mine almost died from an allergic reaction to the antivenin after a broad-banded copperhead bite. Another friend rode out a bite from the same species and just had some swelling in his hand for a day or two. Another friend got bit on the arse by a copperhead and didn’t treat it - was just sore for a couple days with no treatment.
Also, having antivenin can make you more likely to have an allergic reaction to it if received again. For a copperhead bite, I’m resisting antivenin treatment unless there’s an absolute necessity for it (i.e., onset of tissue necrosis, impending organ failure, compartment syndrome, etc.).
ETA: Far too many doctors - even in areas where snakebites are common - have no clue what they are doing or follow outdated treatment regimens.

I agree. We give CroFab way too often and aggressively when we can just wait and see what happens and still give it. It's a huge $$$$ maker.
