Is this a bargain or are there certain models I should be wary of? I'm indifferent about aesthetics. My only need is that it groups fairly well and reliably goes bang.

I'm sure it's capable of 6" groups at 100yds if you consider that grouping well.

It will go bang if you can find ammo for it.

Check the left side of the barrel where it screws into the receiver. If it has "JM" stamped in it than its a pre-remington marlin and will almost definitely be a shooter

I've never shot one that wasn't a sub 2" rifle at 100 yards

If it’s a pre safety model then it’s a bargain. If it has an external safety then it’s not that great of a deal regardless of condition.
Get the serial number and google the formula to determine the age. Older is always better in this case

Older JM marked ones are definitely better and no external safety is more sought after, but even $275 for a newer model in decent shape is a very good price.

Agreed. I cant imagine it not being good enough to kill stuff with.

Marlin 30-30 serial number info

I have a '73 Marlin and its a damn fine deer rifle for the south. Can easily put a tight pattern with Leverevolution ammo.

I actually found the American Whitetail to group better through mine. But I guess one can't be to picky these days.

Update: it has the jm stamp and the serial number indicates it was made in 1992. I didn't even bother haggling, Just gave him the asking price. Thanks for all the replies.
