if you are shooting skeet you should be using a 12 gauge O/U.

I agree. My 20ga slug gun is probably my favorite hunting gun but my point is that there is not much difference in recoil between a 12ga and 20ga when shooting skeet with low brass target loads. To each his own though

I've shot highly competitive with an 870 express 12 gauge.

Is that what I'd buy to shoot competitive? Hell no.

Is that what I'm used to shooting? Hell yes.

Bottom line is you need something very reliable that you're comfortable shooting. A custom fitted kreighoff will net you a better score at the end of the day, but if you have a junky arse pump you've been hunting with since you were a kid, use that.

So a 12ga is overkill for everything except 90% of what you do with a shotgun.

Same here. Shells cost the same and the guns are more nimble. If you miss with a 20, you would have missed with a 12.

It is. My brother hunts exclusivity with a 20 gauge, and I'd put him up against anybody on this board in any meat gathering competition.

Short of geese and deer, a 12 gauge is overkill.

What I posted had nothing to do with how I feel about 12/20. I was just pointing out that he said "a 12 ga is overkill for everything you use a shotgun for except everything you use a shotgun for."

I shoot a 12, but I'd kill and have killed just as much shite with a 20. The first 5-8 deer I killed in my life were with a Remington 870 youth model 20.

Every year I go dove hunting with a 12 gauge, and bring home wayyyyyyyyyyy more meat and feather patties than I should. The 20 gauge is a man's gauge and the 12 is a handicap

Downshift said it right. You need to find out what your comfortable with. I shoot a 870 supermag with a modified choke. As for shells I usually shoot 7.5-9 target/dove load.

I use an O/U 20. Although it's been a while since I've gone shooting.

This you do, but I don't advocate anybody go out and buy an 870 express to shoot competition.

My 90 lb mother in law and my wife shot trap with a 12. Those
Shoot what you're comfortable with.

Browning Citori

Lightning or White Lightning would be a good start.

So we don't use a shotgun for:

Dove
Quail
Rabbits
Ducks
Skeet
Crows

Intradasting.

You dont duck hunt enough, unless I am hunting timber and they are right on me I am using a 12. shite even if they are I am throwing 2 3/4 4s or 6s and still using a 12. Teal season being an exception.

I agree. I will shoot at them with whatever I have in my hand.

Normally use a 12 for them but a 20 will reach out there too.

3.5" magnesium turkey load 10 gauge shells at 5 yards are not overkill for crows.
