I've been shooting my whole life right-handed, but I'm left-eye dominant. I'm 33 and have been wondering if it's worth switching over. The main thing I can't hit is a dove, which may be a lack of practice. I'm good enough hitting ducks. Has anyone else been through this?

I shoot left handed, right eye dominant. I'll never switch. I've never had a problem hitting what I'm aiming at.

It could make a difference. If you are shooting with both eyes open and using your non-dominant eye to look down the barrel, it can throw your aim off.

I recently started shooting a bow. Acquired a left-handed bow from a family member for free, so that's what I'm shooting. Problem was, I was always right of the target at first, because I was shooting with both eyes open and my right eye was taking over. So, I started using an eye patch over my right eye. Did that all of 3 days. By then, I had taught myself to close my right eye while keeping my left eye open. Problem solved.

Now, considering you don't really "aim" a shotgun but rather point or lead with it, it may not be as much an issue. If you find you are constantly left of your target, then yeah, you might want to switch it up.

After not being able to hit shite for 20 years I just realized I am left eye dominant and have always shot right handed.

Last year I focused on keeping both eyes open while still shooting right handed. I noticed a pretty good increase in kills when I did it.

Best thing to do is switch to shooting left handed but I dont have time to go sit at a range for a week and it felt dangerous as frick the few times I attempted it while hunting.

I am the same way as OP. When I was a kid, I couldn't hit broad side of a barn. I was shooting over everything. Then I realized I was left eye dominant. Now I just shoot a right hand gun left handed. Now I just miss without any excuses. I've heard of people with the same problem who can shoot fine right handed. I plan on getting a left handed Escort this year cause I'm tired of powder flying in my eyes

I don't have a dominant eye but am ambidextrous with shooting a shotgun.

I'm LH, but grew up shooting RH. Shooting LH with a rifle was pretty easy to switch to. I still shoot RH with my handguns however. I just couldn't get comfortable racking the slide and gripping the handgun LH.

Wtf is the story with that gif? I don't see any blood splatter so is it the shooter pranking the other guy by using blanks?

I'm RH but have always shot a shotgun or rifle LH. I didn't realize the eye dominance crap until a few yrs ago and then everything made perfect sense.

Here's a good video on the topic.

My wife had same issue when she started shooting. She used tape to keep her left eye closed until she could "train" her right eye. Worked like a charm.

Another RH who's L eye dominant and shoots with both eyes open. Only time I close an eye is to look through optics. Otherwise shotgun, handgun or rifle with irons is both open.

I felt like it was easier than learning to shotgun left handed but I never tried so what the heck do I know.

My brother is right-handed and left eye dominant. When we were 12 it led to a nasty scar on his right cheek from a single shot 12 gauge when he leaned over the gun so that he could look down the barrel with his left eye, and the hammer came forward and sliced his cheek open. He's been shooting left-handed ever since, and is a damn good shot. Try it. What can it hurt.
