I bought a Gladiator the other day.
Was $48,500 out the door, and that dealer was $7,000 cheaper than the best deal I could wrangle at the next 2 closest dealers for the options I wanted.

and they hold their value on the used market too. I've been seeing models with 25k miles for $45k. Which is why I went ahead and bought new.

I looked at a Ram, but for the options I wanted I had to get a Laramie Limited, and those fricking things are over $70k on the sticker.

Same for the Fords, at least last year it was. It isn't that damn bad. People need to quit buying platinums and all these other ridiculous trims. Having some accessories doesn't make the truck worth double a base model.

Remember when people used trucks like trucks? They were not afraid to put lumber in the bed. Or to get a scratch on it. It's a truck....

First truck back in 1996 was a chevy full size long bed short cab for $15,000 brand new

No doubt, but I suspect if you compared truck prices to other indices, including car prices, you'll find that the prices have risen faster than a lot of other durable goods. I could be wrong but I don't remember trucks being the more expensive options on the lots in the 80s.

I bought my first new truck in 1996. A Chevy 1500 Cheyenne, single cab ,short bed with the 350. I thought I was rich . I think I paid 16500 for it at All Star in BR.
My current truck was 49800 in 2017. Times have changed a little.

20 years ago 60 Minutes was doing storylines about how Union Health Benefits were adding to cost of vehicles. Something like $4k/vehicle in retiree Viagra prescriptions alone.

The biggest difference is the increase in trim levels as said. You can get work trucks at the end of the year when the new models come in for reasonable prices, top of the line are all expensive.

I remember a comment in a financial article that was probably about that old. GM had brought in some outside guy to look at their finances, and he said after looking at GM's books he realized they're not a car company. They're a retirement company that just sells vehicles so they can fund retirements.

Remember when trucks were still mostly for work and the base model single cabs were heavily marketed?

I wish single cab trucks still looked as good as those mid 90s ones. All the brands looked good then imo.

As a young teen on the farm I drove a 96 F-150 single cab v8 4x4 during my summer job. Loved that truck. Best friend had a 98 Ram 1500 single cab 4x4 with 35 inch Co-op mud grips that was unstoppable.

Thing is back then you could single cabs in more than the base package. I don’t think you can do that now with any of the 3 brands. They’re all cheaply made base models with a v-6. My dad’s last single cab was a 07 Chevy with 5.3 4x4 that was a beast. It pulled so good

I also miss being able to get a standard transmission especially in a heavy duty.

Guy around here with a dirt moving crew still pulls all his fuel trailers with old standard first Gen Rams with a 12 valve Cummins. Just the sound of those engines give me a chubby

Single cab f250 SXT package is a damn fine truck and far from stripped down. I had a 2018 and really wish I had kept it.

Regretting the note. Tough to pay it when the one you had would be paid off right now.
