New Red Drum size and daily creel limits go into effect and will be enforced beginning June 20, 2024.
The new regulations are as follows:
• Daily Creel: 4- fish daily limit per angler
• Size Limit: 18-inch minimum and 27-inch maximum total length
• Bull Reds: keeping Red Drum over 27 inches is prohibited
• The retention of Red Drum by captain and crew on charter or head boats while on a for-hire trip will be prohibited.
Charter captains and crew will still be allowed to engage in fishing on charter trips to demonstrate how to catch red drum, but will not be allowed to retain red drum towards any limit on the vessel.

Wait this means I don't get to keep ANY redfish if I fire a guide?

That would seem dumb. I wonder if it means you can only keep the limits for the customers and not include the caption and crew limits.

This is the intent of the law. It's the same way for specs now.

I also legitimately don't remember the last time I caught a redfish between 18 and 27. Everything I catch is over or under the slot.

With a slot are they still allowing bow fishing or was that changed already?

Damn. They sure slipped this one under the radar, unlike the Spec limit changes.

They've been talking about it for a while now.

I must have missed it then. I feel like there was more public hoopla over the Speck changes and we just heard more about it before a decision was made.

No changes to bowfishing other than getting a permit so they can gather more data.

I wonder what the plans are for the grand isle redfish rodeos. That’s 99% bulls.

I'm on board but seems like redfish (and specks) have been plentiful in the Hopedale/Shell Beach area this spring. Not mad about the guide not keeping a limit, that's the same on the specks now too.

Love the ban on keeping over 27"; just no reason for it. Many/most rodeos have gotten on board with largest slot red anyway, though still are a few holdouts.

Sure wish they'd have kept the 16" rule though and not 18.

I think 16”-25” would have made a whole lot more sense. In that scenario, you likely have more fish escaping into the breeding class.
