My dad picked me up a new carrot stick at the sportmans show and I need to finish it out. He says the rod is what matters not the reel he uses 30 dollar reels he calls disposable when they break he tosses them and grabs another. He fishes a lot and that’s proably the way to go but I fish 10 to 20 days a year I’d like to put something nice on it. Looking for 120 or less preferable that academy caries (they are good about returns.)

$120 or less? I’d get a penn battle. FYI they are $80s on amazon

Penn battle
I do like my Diawa BG as well.

Penn Battle would be perfect if you want to use it a few months then trash it when goes to shite.
Daiwa BG is the answer.

Shimano NASCI. Get the 3000, same size as 2500 w more line capacity. Great drag, sealed AR bearing, sealed body.

Second the Nasci at that price range

Penn Battle is hard to argue with. Only knock I have on it is that the reel handle is plastic (on the model I bought at least) though I've never had any issues.
Also own the predecessor to the NASCI from shimano that was offered at the same price point. Mine gets a little finnicky in cold weather, but it is noticeably smoother than the penn

piscifun makes great stuff. very durable, comparable to lew's, etc but 1/3 the price.

Shimano Sedona or Sahara in whatever size you need. It will last you a long time with a simple freshwater rinse after use. Save you a little $ too.

Daiwa.
I have a Daiwa Procyon for 5 years now that has become my favorite spinning reel. Very well made and has held up great with alot of use in both fresh and salt water.
Anybody else have one of these?

Ill post this anytime someone asks what spinning reel they should get.
The answer is Shimano at whatever your targeted price range. May be able to find a deal on a NIB reel on ebay.

He also said <$120, so it's not like he's getting a stradic. And fishing 10-20 days/yr, either of those reels should last many years and do a great job in that time.

If you are not going to take the time to properly clean it after use(plenty of fresh water to gently rinse away salt, sand, and dirt then spray down with something like reel magic after), then "disposable" is the way to go.
Penn Battle is a good choice.

I am a fan of Okuma as well, I have one and it has been bullet proof for me. I use it mostly for surf fishing, which is about as rough on a reel as it gets. I just make sure to rinse and spray. This is the type I have.

I assume the Penn would be easier to find locally but who knows.
