I'd imagine Savage would be the popular answer but I've read good reviews about Marlin as well. Just looking for some TD input.
Thanks
Thanks

I have a Savage 93r17. The gun is stupid accurate but I absolutely hate the design of the magazine and magazine catch.
If I were buying again, I’d get the rotary magazine fed b17.

I have a Marlin XT 17hmr. It isn't much to look at, but it is very accurate and reliable.

I hit a thumbtack at 100 yards on the first shot with a cz 457 this weekend. Spent time after that wearing out steel. That's a damn fine rifle.

I have a Savage B17 FV-SR. It's ridiculously accurate.

Are you dead set on a .17? .22 wmr doesn't shoot as flat but it's more practical for hogs imo

CZ. Hard to beat in anything rimfire. Worth the little extra money.

I have the marlin. Solid and fun to shoot. One suggestion if you’re planning on eating the squirrels is to shoot them in the head. It will tear up the meat in a hurry. My nephews killed 15 or so cotton tails one evening and we barely had enough for one meal for 3 adults and two kids.

Is 17 HMR enough for hogs? I've always thought of it as a small, accurate varmint round for small game. Am I wrong?

Mine has killed a pile of them, just have to use head shots. I’ve only had one I shot that dropped then got back up and hauled butt. Head on shot, pretty sure it just skipped off its forehead.

17HMR is way too much for squirrels unless you are proficient in head shots and even then you might wind up with a bloody mess
great rifle though i have a savage A17 and it is a nutria rat’s worst nightmare

choice of firearm doesn't matter because the .17HMR is an inherently accurate cartridge just like the .204, .222, 6PPC, and 6.5x47L (6.5 CM). The case dimensions, bullet choice, and powder selection make it one of the most accurate and fun to shoot cartridges. Not uncommon to see 5-shot groups covered by a dime at 100 yds.
I've built and consulted on over a hundred custom rifles as the primary goal has been accuracy. The .17 HMR was introduced in 2002 and I was very intrigued since I'm a fan of the .17 and .20 caliber rifles. That same year I decided to build a custom HMR and ordered a chamber reamer from PTG. Then sent my rifle components to one of the best rimfire gunsmiths in the country. Sako P94 action that was blueprinted, Lilja barrel, Jewell 12 ozs. trigger, Kelbly trued/machined scope rings, Stith custom maple stock, pillar and glass-bedded, no stone left unturned. I had close to $2000 invested and this rifle that is insanely accurate. Honestly, I've witnessed $250 factory rifles shoot just as accurate. It's not the platform, but the cartridge is just crazy accurate. My longest confirmed kill is a jackrabbit at 246 yds. My advice, buy whatever rifle you like, then spend the rest on buying a case of ammo
here are some 20 yr old pics as the maple stock pictures were taken with a Sony Mavica 3.5" floppy disc digital camera
custom machined pillars
Sako action with Kelbly machined rings
bedded walnut stock
completed rifle pics from GS
custom tiger Maple stock
English walnut buttplate
Sister rifle I built years later that is chambered in 17 HM2 .. same components just different wood stock
