Reason I like a magnum for deer

After years of using .243 to .300, I always find myself with the 300. The two biggest bucks Ive seen this season presented brisket shots. I chose not to take either.
But, I feel more comfortable with the heavier round on those weird angles. Last season I was able to pass a 150 gr sp through a doe facing me.
There are light loads available to be more tame.

I use a .300 Weatherby Mag. Where I hunt you don’t want to be searching.

Any grown man can handle a 338 win mag, and most can handle a 375 h&h. Most people have piss poor form off the bench, and that's where they shoot the most, so they think recoil is horrible.
I'm not a big guy and I've shot a 375h&h 30 times off a bench in about an hour and a half without issue.

These days, it feels like my .270 is shooting $10-a-round too.

This is one thing I've never understood. If you're going to shoot a magnum why hinder its performance by going light grain for caliber. Hell a 140gr Accubond from a 7mm-08 will go end to end on a deer. Couple that with the fact that 99% of people shoot better with less recoil and I see no reason for a 300 Mag for a whitetail. Especially down here in the South

My 5 year old folded up a doe with a 62gr .223 yesterday. Shot placement is all that matters. I can understand magnums for trajectory but it’s rarely needed in forest type hunting.
I have a 7mm-08 and a 7mag and the 7 mag has been collecting dust for a few years now

My favorite shot is with the deer facing me and shooting it in the neck. Of course this is only for shots 150 yds and in and esp on does.
That being said I usually shoot 100 gr bullets in my 257 wthby. To me speed and shot placement is everything

As much of a 7mm-08 and 280AI fan as I am, I've never seen a deer react to being hit like they do with a 257Wby. Its like they get hit by lightning.

This is very true. But it does take away OP's excuse for using a Magnum because of wanting to not have to worry about weird shot angles. Speed kills. It'll also cause bullets that aren't well constructed to come apart before they do their job

You'll almost always see that excuse for a large majority of folks that claim how they'll never use anything other than magnums for deer. "I want my tree hunnerd in case I make a bad shot....." Why not buy a non magnum caliber and actually shoot it a lot and practice. That'll increase your success on animals a lot more than depending on a magnum to make up for your lack of shooting ability. I know quite a few folks that are great shots and they also use magnums. But they are like the guy above stated. They use one rifle for everything and they hunt big game

In general people can't shoot worth a damn, aren't smart enough to understand bullet performance, and are arrogant enough to think the deer they lose are the bullets fault.
Gotta say though, I killed a deer with a .338 win mag last weekend and I honestly don't see myself using anything else anymore. Its damn fun to shoot.

I agree 100% Downshift. 95% of folks think they are a lot better shot than they really are. There's also zero doubt in how effective magnums are in the hands of someone capable of shooting them accurately. Those 338's are some bad boys for sure

It cracks me up when people who have a 7 mag with a 26" barrel and a 4-16 scope miss at 150 yards. Buy all that bullshite because they think they are chris Kyle and all this equipment is going to make it happen, and they can't get it done at COMFORTABLE .30-30 range.
I hate cleaning a deer shot with a big magnum and soft bullets. Its pointless and wasteful. There's no real reason to use them in Louisiana for anything unless you just want to. The only reason I have one is we travel at least once every year elk hunting, and I'm not going to buy a safe full of rifles for doing different things.

Yea it does. I think the real niche for belted magnums is flinging heavy for caliber bullets at normal speed though. If the goal is busting deer up, you can accomplish that easily with a 150gr out of a .30-06 out farther than most people can reliably hit them.
Shoot a big heavy bullet out of a belted mag and you're going to put less energy on the deer than you would with a .270 130gr soft point and at that point, why bother with a big loud long barrel magnum qt qll?
Like I said earlier, I might not kill a deer with anything other than .338 win mag again because I love the rifle, but it does not put aa much energy on the deer as my .30-06 with 165gr game kings did

The great thing about our country and our current time is that there are a ton of options for whatever anyone wants to shoot. There are also a ton of options on very accurate and inexpensive guns.
50-60 years ago a gun was several weeks worth of pay or more.
Now, they're a small portion of a months pay for most.
I would never use a magnum other than a .257wby on a deer in the south. I just don't think it's necessary after what I've seen bullets like a 6.5 grendel, 6.8 spc or a 6.5 cm. Each of those have been DRT shots.
I guess the main point is accuracy kills quickly. I shoot a lot. Probably more than 95% of the posters on this board and I take my son with me a lot of the time. The way to get accurate is to shoot. A lot.

I know a lil .243 kills deer and has minimal recoil. My son shot his first deer with a 7mm-08 using a managed recoil load. It was an 8pt with 18" insides. Nice deer. But I just love shooting my 300 win mag.
When I started looking for a deer rifle years back, I didn't have a lot of expendable cash. Had to buy used. Saw this one on the Sportsman for 300 bucks with shitty optics. Right in my price range so I bought it after I went put a few rounds through it.
Thats how/why I shoot a big gun. Yes it kicks. Yes it's more gun than I need. But that's my business.
I've since had some work done to the gun that has helped make it incredibly fun to shoot now. Enjoy your .243. God bless you. But stop harassing me because I shoot whitetail with a 300 mag.
