I didn't know they had snipers

Its good enough to put bullets on a man silhouette at 300 yards so in a pinch, it'll work for killing deer.

I don’t have a worry. I don’t shoot 300 meters open sighted.
I do sight my rifles in at 100 yards. I take my deer hunting seriously. I don’t sight my bow in at 5 yards. Why sight a deer rifle in at 25?

I mean it’s the national guard, do they do much outside of spraying and praying anyway?

Iron sights vs a scope isn’t really comparable imho.
100yds with irons sights and you really can’t see a pinpoint target like you can at 25yds.

Scope you should be able to easily see a pinpoint target at 100yds.

I think when the guardsman goes to his unit, and he gets issued his weapon to qualify with, they shoot at 25 yards first, to make sure that the rifle is on paper. The rifle has been issued to a crapload of others, and you never know what they've done to the sights. Once they get a good group on paper, they'll move out to 100 yards and really start sighting in. I don't think they are just going with the 25 yard target and calling that good.

I guess I need to clarify my statement for all of my downvotes. I have a range at the farm with a wooden shooting table and have 3 steel plates there. A 12” steel plate at 25, 100 and 200 yards. I always start with the 25 yard plate. I rarely need to adjust but I start there and then shoot the 100 and 200 plates.

I always start at 25 yards, 30-06, 270 whatever, dead on and it will be 1.5 inches high at 100yards. Dead on at 200yards. Saves ammo. I check all ranges and I find this pretty true every time.

If I have bore sighted a scope myself, or my main gunstore guy does it, I will just go ahead to 100 yards and skip the 25 yard thing, because I know it will be pretty close. He mounted a scope for me and bore sighted it the other day. First 3 shot group at 100 yards, was an inch and a half to the right and 2 inches low.

I guess you could bore sight iron sights using a vice, but it would be more of a pain in the arse, might as well do the 25 yard target and get it done.

You can also bore sight a bolt action rifle by looking down the bore and putting it relatively on target and then adjusting the scope. It'll never be perfect, but its always at least gotten me on the paper for the first shot. Then hold on the bullseye and track the crosshairs up to the bullet hole to get it on the paper at 100.

This is really the best way to do it, especially if you have a vice. You can be on at 100 yards in 3 shots. I don't own a gun vice myself, but I used my cousin's lead sled once to do this. Looked down the bore to a 25 yard target, and got what I thought was lined up dead center, took one shot and then moved my scope, so that the crosshairs were on my bullet hole. Took it out of the vice, next shot 100 yards, adjusted then took 3 more shots to check it. It worked great.

This is what I do. I have been surprised how close the first shot is with this method. Saves ammo, for sure.

Also saves time. I bore sight like this at home, saving time when I get to the range.
